starting solids question

Do you start solids according to actual or adjusted age? When did you start and what did you start with??

DD is 4 mos actual (2 mos adjusted) and I wasn't planning on starting solids until 6 mos adjusted which would be in march when she is acutally 8 months. I was planning on just EBFing her until then and then starting solids-probably purees first and then soft  foods.

Just wondering what others did and what pedi's recommend.

I know it's pretty far in advance but I'm just curious and a little confused.

Re: starting solids question

  • I started DD on solids at her actual age of six months. I first started with sweet potatoes. Did that for three days and then started on a fruit, I believe it was applesauce.

  • We started at 6 months actual, 3 adjusted.  It seemed a little early but they wanted him to have extra practice. He did OK for a while, but then went on a strike for a couple months, and started back up around 8 months adjusted.
  • We started at 6 months actual- by then she had mastered the bottle, was eating on a really good schedule, had really good head control and sat up well in the highchair. If any of those pieces had been missing I probably would have pushed it. You'll have a better idea as LO gets closer to 6 months if they're ready or not.

  • Okay thanks ladies!!
  • We were going to wait until adjusted age like you are thinking, but our pedi wants us to go ahead and start now that he's 6 months old and caught up in his percentiles.  He's been refusing to take bottles now for the past 2 months, and our pedi said that if we don't start him getting used to the texture of food and such he could start refusing food too.  Not sure how much of that is true or BS, but we're going to start solids anyway because he's developmentally ready for it (sitting up unassisted for short periods of time, grabbing for things etc.).
