pocketing food?

The other day Ryan and I were eating frozen pizza.  Andrew hadn't eaten in a while (I'm feeding him oatmeal and yogurt and trying to let him fill in between) and he was begging for some.  A lot fo times he begs for our food when we eat.

So I gave him a piece of sausage.  IT was really soft, small enough,. and flavorful.  he seemed to love it and after a few min begged for more. I was surprised.

About 15 min later he went down for a nap.  When he woke up from his nap, there were the 3 pieces of sausage I gave him all over his floor.  He hadn't puked, they were still hole, he just never ate them.

I'm just curious if this is typical toddler behavior?  I thought he ate them b/c he wasn't chewing. It's hard to check after each bite because he will bite (his teeth hurt).  Anyone else had this happen?  Obviously I'll mention it to his new OT.

Re: pocketing food?

  • I would say it's typical. Sounds like he was just playing a game.

On walks, I usually give the kids a 'snack trap' of cereal. Katie will take the cereal out, put it all in the pockets of her jacket, then either eat them or return the cereal to the container. I find all kinds of things in her pocket.  It's annoying, to say the least, when I'm doing laundry.

  • Did you put it in his mouth?  If we give Claire food (but not directly in her mouth), it seems like she'll hold onto it for hours sometimes.  Out of nowhere she'll pull it out and we laugh because we gave it to her hours ago.  Also, she'll put things in her cheeks, and just keep it there like gum.  We usually end up taking it out.
  • I'm sorry. I should clarify. I'm saying that he's pocketing food in his MOUTH.  Like I saw him eat all 3 pieces.

  • Yeah, Claire does that once in a while.  We call her a little chipmunk!
  • It's not an uncommon toddler behavior.  As an OT, I've seen it most commonly with meats as well.  However, since there's a possibility that he has some sensory issues, it could be something related to that more than just a toddler behavior.  I'd definitely talk to his new OT.  :)

Interesting.  Maybe that's b/c a lot of toddlers don't like meaty textures?  He's done that some meats but I didn't expect it with sausage b/c it's so soft and he seemed to like it.  He's done the same with ham. We found it ours later in his gum. Fail!

Ahhh, that makes sense. Please ignore my response :-)

  • I've heard of this -- just be careful.  I have several friends who's toddlers do this and inevitably, they end up choking on it, especially when they lay down and go to sleep.

That is what I'm worried about :/ Now I'm wondering should I check his mouth before I lay him down?!

I had no clue he had food in there.

Yep, it's weird.  About 90% of the time that I've seen kids that pocket food, it's meat.
