Y'all wanna hear the latest of my Mom-Crazy?

Not me (heh), but my mom.  Some of you may remember my posts about how nutso my mom is.

Well, this last visit, she would, without knowing she was doing it, repeat the last word or short phrase I uttered.

Like if I said "Jonathan, are you hungry, honey?", she'd say in a low voice "hungry?".

Or, the worst is when she and B were playing in the kitchen and I asked J to "come outside, sweetie" and she said "come outside, sweetie".

And I'd say that she's nearly unaware that she's doing it.  It's not a purposeful thing at all.

It was very, very odd.  Very.

But, on the flip side, she just installed a great tree swing on her property for the boys this past weekend.  So while she's crazy and drives me bonkers, she does love her grandchildren.

  • Do you think something could be going on health-wise?
  • That would drive me bat.***.crazy.  More power to you for being calm and rational, because my patience level is about at 0 and I'd more than likely say "wtf is wrong with you??"
    Happy 4th birthday!

No.  I mean, physically, no.  Mentally, she's always been on medication so maybe the dosage needs to be revisited.

  • Ditto Auntie.  H's OCD family member does this all the time.  Drove me batty until I realized what it was.

That's a form of echolalia called palilalia. It's often seen in ASDs and OCD.

Wow. So there is likely something going on there. Winery, has she been checked out recently? Do you know if she was diagnosed with anything years ago?

  • my grandmother started doing this in the early stages of her Alzheimers.  She would also read random billboards out loud while we were driving.  I have noticed that my MIL is starting to do this also, but no one wants to hear about it

This... My aunt does this.  She has early stage Alzheimer's.

  • Alzheimers?  I don't think so at all.  She's 55.

  • I really would talk to her doctor about it, even if you think there's nothing wrong. That's not normal.

    Age really doesn't matter. https://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-06-11-alzheimers-cover_N.htm

And really, if she's always been this way maybe it's something like tourette's? I just don't think I would blow her off as crazy if she has other issues.
