Preemies

blood transfusions...

Hi everyone.. I am just curious as to how many/how often your LO's got blood transfusions.  DD needs another one tonight because her hermatocrit levels are low, but she just got one a couple days ago.  The last one before that was about a week ago.  I am getting concerned because she needs another one so soon after just getting one.

TIA!

Re: blood transfusions...

  • DD had a few close together. It was troubling, but it made a HUGE difference for her.

I hope your DD responds well and has better days ahead!

  • Andrew had 2 right in the beginning (maybe the first 1-2 weeks?) and was close to needing another but he did not.  They helped him a lot.  I hope that she doesn't need anymore! Hugs!

  • I honestly don't remember, but I know that it was a lot. DS always responded well when he got them so it was one of those things I never really gave a second thought to since we were dealing with so many other things.

  • I honestly can't remember exactly, but I know he had 2 or 3 in the first couple of weeks. Then he had another maybe around 8w old and then actually had to have another just before discharge because he was going to have surgery and was a little low.

  • Jack got 4 (I think?) when all was said and done. They always perked him up and helped him keep his sats where they needed to be. Preemies don't make RBC as quickly as they lose them so sometimes they need a little boost. I know you'll worry, but try not to. They are fairly routine.

  • My DD had 2...and they helped her a lot.  I was really hoping they would give her a transfusion before discharge...her hematocrit was very low.  They didn't...and said they'd let her raise her Hct on her own....

well.... she ended up needing oxygen and was on oxygen for 3 months at home.  I truly believe if they would have given her a 3rd transfusion, she would not have struggled so hard with her sats.

  • My son has had a whole bunch (maybe 7 or 8), including some clustered pretty close together in his first weeks.  His last one was just 2 weeks ago, when he was fighting an infection.  Hopefully this is it for him!  They do an amazing job of helping their sats and perking them up.

  • My DS had three and they were all within a week and a half. They helped my son greatly. His color really improved then he came home a couple weeks later. Good Luck to your LO!

  • DD had 2 within the first 72 hours.

  • DD had  3 during her 4 month NICU stay.

Question though : are you breastfeeding? I was pumping, and they ended up putting extra iron in her bottle to help out, and she didn't need a transfusion after that.

  • My little guy only had 1. We noticed a difference the next day. It's very common for preemies to have them. I remember one of the nurses telling me, it's not a matter of if he needs one, it's a matter of when he'll get it. I took this to mean that a lot of preemies have them. DS did great with it!
