Cloth Diapering

Nighttime help

At night our BG 4.0s are triple stuffed (the regular insert and 2 nb inserts, or one nb and one hemp baby).  In the past week we've had 3 leaks, and it's happened with both the nb and with the hemp babies in.

I've been reading here about nighttime diapers and it seems that fitteds+wool are the preferred way to go, but from what I can gather, between the fitted, inserts/doublers, and wool covers, we're looking at $50 or $60 for a single nighttime diaper!

Is there any way to get a good, leak-resistant nighttime setup for (much) cheaper?  Also, are there any good patterns for me to sew my own fitteds?

Re: Nighttime help

  • You can get wool longies on ETSY for $10-20.
  • For fitteds:

    - Check for used fitteds. When DD was a super-heavy wetter, I swore by Very Baby Basic (or Simply) Nights, which run about $30 new. I got all mine used for under $15.

    - Happy Hempys are a great option that's lower cost (under $20 new). They also come in a microfleece-lined version, which is great for overnights.

    - Fitteds are super easy to sew, since you don't have to mess with PUL or anything. I sew mine out of old t-shirts or sheets that I have around the house, so they are basically free. Rita's Rump Pocket is an excellent, easy-to-sew, and FREE pattern. It's a pocket fitted, so you can stuff it as full as you need for overnights. Here's the link: https://handmadebyrita.blogspot.com/2007/10/classic-rrp-ritas-rump-pocket-pattern.html

    For wool:

    - Recycled wool soakers can be bought for under $10. My favorite overnight soaker cost all of $4 including shipping.

    - If you sew, you can buy a thrift store sweater for a buck or two, and use the also excellent, also easy-to-sew, and also FREE Katrina pattern to make soakers and longies: https://katrinassqs.blogspot.com/2007/10/free-soaker-pattern.html (look for the longies pattern link under "Links" on the right side)

    - Since you only need to wash wool about once a month, you can easily get away with just one or two covers, cutting down on the cost.

    - To cut down the cost even more, skip the fitteds, and just put the wool cover over your current BG's. Then, if the BG does leak, the wool will catch it.

  • Flyer, thank you so much!!  You've been so helpful :-D

I'm going to try out some sewing first and see how that goes.  Thrift store, here I come!

  • Also the wool can be used over and over before you even have to wash it, so it can't be counted in the cost of each diaper and if you wash every other day you only really need 2 overnight diapers (coming from someone with like 8 lol)

Yeah I wash every day/every other day, but DS still wakes up at night, and won't go back to sleep if he's wet, even if his diaper isn't saturated (he's a picky guy), so I need 2-3 per night.  So I want... 6 to be safe.

I'm going to get some flannel and try and make a few of those RRPs that PP posted the link to, but I want to add some velcro so I don't have to worry about pins (I could use snappis, but I think I'd like velcro better and it wouldn't be hard to do), and some fleece as an inner layer.

So I think I can make 6-8 for cheap and get at least 2 soakers if I find a decent sized wool sweater at Goodwill, and then hopefully I'll be set.

I bought some flannel dipes from drybees pockets I like for overnight.  They did not come with inserts but they weren't too pricey at $17 each.
