Cloth Diapering

Please explain fitteds

I currently use prefolds and a cover during the day and was using BG one size diapers at night. However, the BG's became filled with an amonia smell everytime my little guy uses them and his skin turns red so we haven't used them..I can't seem to find a good way to cure this issue. Anyways, I see a lot of talk about the fitteds and I have no idea how they work. Are they similar to a prefold, but you just don't need to fold them on your own(hence the name fitteds??) or do you need a cover?

Please explain them and let me know if you've used them for overnight! If so, which brand do you prefer?? Thanks so much gals!

Re: Please explain fitteds

  • Fitteds essentially go on like a disposable (although most of the ones I've seen have snaps) and need a cover because they're not waterproof. Tjhey're often in really cute prints, and are very breathable.

What have you done to fix your ammonia issue with the BGs? Have you tried stripping? What about some extra rinses? That sounds like you have some build up. Rockin' Green is also releasing a product tomorrow (I think) that's supposed to combat ammonia stink.

  • I don't use fitteds, but you're right that they are used like prefolds, but don't have to fold them.  Some come with snaps or aplix and some you have to use a snappi on and you need a cover with them.  I know a lot of people use kissaluvs

  • I love fitteds.  They need a cover.  I like to use wool.  They come in really cute prints and they are way more absorbent than prefolds.  I use Monkey Snuggles, Goodmama and Kiwi Pie during the day and I use Monkey Snuggles Overnights and BuBuBeBe for overnights.  I hardly ever use my pockets anymore.  I save those for DH since he hates snaps.
