6-9 month toy recs?

DD will be 6 1/2 months on Christmas and I'm at a loss as to what to get her!

We really don't have many toys for her and she honestly isn't interested in 90% of the stuff we do have! The only toys she actually plays with are her crinkle book and linking rings. All other rattles/teethers/rings just don't seem to interest her.

We are getting her the Zany Zoo from Target (to grow into) and we aren't really into lights/sounds toys (would rather have wood or natural toys). At what age do they get into the soft blocks or stacking rings?

I want to get her some gifts she can grow into (within a few months) and some she can play with right away. I'm feeling like a bad mommy not having any toys around!

  • don't feel bad, pots and pans to bang on offer just as much learning experience as an expensive toy (that usually takes batteries) but that age is great for any kind of noise making.... stuffed animals are great! you can say the different names and sounds they make... and balls of all sizes are really fun when they start crawling around. and blocks and stacking toys are perfect.... she may just knock them over mostly, but she will enjoy it when you pick them up and let her do it again!

  • We've bought a wooden trolley that she can walk with, it has wooden building blocks in the tray and they each have numbers and letters on them.

but I agree with pp, everything is a toy at this stage.

I'm relaly into heuristic play where you stimulate the different sense and so I have baskets of things for her to explore. Some need supervision like the box from a bar of soap, but that's ok.

At the moment she is really into anything that makes a noise, musical things, things that rattle, chime, squeak or that she can bang like a drum.

  • There is this Fisher Price pig that DS got around that age. He loves it and STILL plays with it almost everyday. It's a great educational toy: colors, counting, sorting, etc.
  • When DS was 7 months old we took him to meet my family in the US so we got a bunch of toys. He liked rattles a lot at that point but these are a couple gifts that he really played with (and still does).

    milk & cookies

soft blocks - similar to these ones The ones we have have the edging so LO can grab them easier and one rattles, one crinkles, etc.

DS loved his jumperoo at that stage.

Stacking rings were too difficult for DS until closer to 12 months.

    Happy shopping.

  • If you're not necessarily looking for toys, you could get the Cloud b constellation turtle. DS loooooves it and it leads to lots of QT. We turn the lights off and play with the glowing stars, making them swirl or pretending to eat them. There are 3 light colors, so we change them and say "orange stars, blue stars, green stars". Plus, it has real constellation patterns and a guide book, so it will "grow"'with her. PS: I love the name Harper. Is she named after Harper Lee? TKAM is one of my top 10 favorite books :)

  • We gave our little guy a wooden cooking spoon yesterday. He's been thrilled with it. He's currently alternating between banging it on a box and gnawing on it. :) We're also doing the Zany Zoo for Christmas.

  • Do you have stacking cups? Our LO loved the stacking cups from Green Sprouts. She still plays with them. We have the zany zoo too!

I got her name from a girl on my Tri boards who had a 3yr old named Harper. I saw it and thought "what a weird name" (and I'm one talk...look at mine). When DH and I were going back and forth I was joking and called out Harper. To my shock he loved it! It grew on me and now I couldn't imagine her as anything else! ;). I do live TKAMB though!!

Haha. Funny how things work. I think Jane is a great middle name for it :)

  • Garanimals from walmart have a line of wooden simple toys in all different age ranges also we always liked Doug and Melissa toys for our 1st DS. They used to be hard to find but I think Target sells them now. We are still using some of them for our 6mo old that our 2yr old played with.
  • Don't feel like a bad mommy, feel like a mommy with an un-toy-cluttered house!  Here were DS's favorites the past few months:

6 mos: stacking rings (to hold and chew, he couldn't stack them), crinkly books, and anything with lights/noise/music.
7 mos: maracas, hard blocks (to bang together), egg cartons, and a play cell phone I got at Target.
8 mos: a tiny plastic bat (it came with a baseball set) which he just went around banging on things with, nesting cups, a squishy ball (the fact that it was squishy helped him to grip it), and the most annoying sesame street toy with a billion buttons to push that all played a different song.
9 mos: the wooden wagon in my siggy pic, a stuffed puppy (awww) and stacking rings again (now he can stack them).

    GL!
