Re: one twin losing a little weight at home

  • I went to our Preemie clinic a few days ago.... my Kate was only gaining 10grams a day.  She is very small.  The MD wouldn't change anything......

I think 10grams is low!  I kept bugging her....and she is having me add a scoop of Neosure to our regular formula.  I hope it works.....

  • I would not worry too much yet.  There can be great differencebetween scales.  Weigh her at home a few times over the next week on your home scale.  If she gains on the home scale you should be ok.  My home baby scale and the Drs never coorelate

This is very true. Our Drs office and the home health scale were never the same.

This is what I was going to say- I'm currently pregnant and at my last dr's appointment the difference between my scale and the doctors office was 12lbs.

  • Ditto everyone above. I just wanted to add that in general one weighing isn't very accurate as to if she's really losing or gaining either. It's more of a trend you're looking for. It's extremely important to weigh under the same circumstances each time if you really want this to work.

Scales are more inaccurate on unstable surfaces such as tables. Try it once, weighing her on a table, then on the floor....they probably won't match. So we always weighed Evan on the kitchen floor in front of the sink.

Clothes add too much variety. Weigh naked, if you weigh wearing a diaper, it must be dry and the same kind every time.

Weigh at the same time of day, on the same schedule. We always weighed in the evening, after his last bottle. In relation to scheduled feeds, just always be consistant. If LO is taking 3oz bottles, a full or empty belly can make that much difference easy.

Poops usually cause temporary dips, as does a bad eating day that's explained by a synagis shot.

Our scale was vital in taking care of Evan for over 1 1/2 yrs. I definitely think they can be a useful tool, but they can work against you when you're not used to them as well. At an age as young as your daughter, if we had 3-4 days where he was down, we then would figure it was real, and start to try to make changes with his intake. Expect that patterns will change as they get older. They slow the rate, and I'm not sure if it's all kiddo's, but Evan's weight gain looks more like a bunch of hills trending up overall.

I will say this too. Weights alone do not tell the full story IMO. I measure length as well. I didn't start out doing this, but it's been hugely helpful. If Evan has a bit where he's not really gaining in weight, I measure him, and sure as shoot he's putting on height. Then he seems to gain weight again, then height. Like I said, I wasn't measuring when he was as young as your LO, but I wish I had.

AND, last but not least.....kiddo's catch up head circumference first, then weight, then height. Just an FYI, FWIW.

    Hope this helped, and GL!
