How did you start purees?

Ok, I'm going back here but DS is starting baby food this weekend and I make my own and was going to start with broccoli but wholesome baby food says 8 months for broccoli.  Any idea why?

Also when you started how much did you give and how many times a day etc?

Re: How did you start purees?

  • I honestly don't know why they say to hold off on broccoli.

That being said, we started with peas & green beans & apples & oatmeal.

We did oatmeal mixed with fruit 3x a day for reflux, but started doing a veggie puree for "lunch" or "dinner."  Then we added it to a second meal around 8ish months.

    Good luck!

  • I think they say to wait b/c broccoli can cause a lot of gas b/c the digestive system isn't that developed yet. Mommy Made cookbook recommends squash and sweet potatoes as first veggies at 6 mo. and apples, bananas and pears as first fruits. it lists 1 ounce or a heaping tablespoon as a serving size. hope that helps!

  • They say to hold off on broccoli till a little later because it tends to be a "gassier" veggie... thus, your wee little babe is more likely to get some bad gas from it and apparently will tolerate it better at a later age.

We started with some sweeter, root veggies, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and then moved on to bananas, pears, apples.

  • I think broccoli is gassy... so it can be difficult to process in their young tummies.

We started with rice cereal one per day for a couple of weeks, then I add a fruit at lunch for a week and then veggies at dinner.

  • I think broccoli can be one of those foods than can be hard to digest or make you gassy. I started with once a day and then twoce a day by 6 mos. She went to three meals a day by maybe 8-9 mos. At first DD would only eat I think half of the stage 1 puree at a sitting. Honestly it depended how much she liked a food, too. She could eat a ton of banana but I'd fight with her to eat half a container of any green veggie :)
  • We started with sweet potatoes and moved on from there. I made my own and froze it in ice cube trays. I would thaw out one cube per meal. If she gobbled that up I would thaw another one.
