High-Risk Pregnancy

Bacterial Vaginosis

This is my first post here and needed some advice. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I am 22 weeks along. I was just diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis. My problem is this; I was prescribed metronidazole and I read that taking these pills before 32 weeks can cause pre-term labor. I also read that a natural remedy is either eating yogurts regularly or actually inserting plain yogurt in your ... with a yogurt dipped tampon. I don't want to have this turn into something worse. Any advice on what I should do?

Re: Bacterial Vaginosis

  • Take the medicine your doctor gave you!!!!

if you dont take the medicine you could go into pre-term labor from the infection itself.

If you doctor prescribed you something that means the risks outweigh the benefits, so take it.

This exactly! I work at a OB/Gyn clinic and  that medicine is prescribed routinely for pregnant women with BV. As this poster stated, the risk outweighs the benefit.

  • Hello,

This BV stuff is so aggravating I've had one every month since my miscarriage in Feb and now i'm 20 wks prego and I still have them. I see a specialist and both the specialist and my ob doc say the medicine is fine but the BV will not harm your child or put you in pre term labor. The specialist actually told me to not even worry about taking the medicine unless it was unbearable. I'd still say listen to your doctor, every practice does something different.

  • You need to take the meds!!

My old OB told me that they dont routinely screen or treat BV unless there are symptoms. I will tell you that I was completely asymptomatic in my last pregnancy, and went into preterm labor at 21w. I wasnt screened, and I was sent home.. 5days later I was fully dilated and in active labor. They managed to stop the contractions and I went from fully dilated back to a 3, but the only reason they couldnt save Lily was because I had BV and the infection had reached her placenta. Take BV very seriously!! The risks of BV outweigh those of taking the antibiotics.

They do a vaginal swab to test for it.

  • I had BV early in my pregnancy (about 10 wks).  My dr prescribed me the same medication.  I had not side effects from it and LO is doing great at 20 wks.  If the medication wasn't safe, they wouldn't prescribe it for you.  Good luck!
