Terrible hip pain while sleeping

Last night, my hips hurt so bad while sleeping, I almost cried.  I woke up at 2:30 am and could barely roll over to the other side, they hurt so much.  Any suggestions about how to help this?  I sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs and another pillow somewhat supporting my belly.  I do have a body pillow but it's not a great one.  Any recommendations?  I'm still so sore today... not sure if I can make it through another night like last night!

 Thanks!

Re: Terrible hip pain while sleeping

  • I would love to hear others' opinions but unfortunately I think that is just one of the bad symptoms of being pregnant.  I have had the pain for awhile now too and I don't see it getting easier anytime soon.  Sorry!  I hate that you are feeling so bad.

  • So sorry- my DW had horrible hip pain the whole time. When I saw your post, I thought you were at the end, which E had it the worst, but since you're only 17w- I would talk to your OB, see if she can recommend anything.

E did a lot of walking and staying active (as much as possible) which seemed to help. Maybe pre-natal yoga? Though, its hard to get motivated when (her words) "There's a dagger in your hip flexor"

    Good luck!

  • I had a really hard time sleeping starting early because of this.  At 30 weeks I went into the hospital on bed rest and when they asked me how they could make me most comfortable, I said that whatever they could do to help my hips stop hurting while I slept would be a Godsend.  They put a cushy mattress on top of the regular mattress with my sheet over it.  OMG, it helped so much!  Maybe a comforter or blanket folded up under your sheet will help by adding some extra padding.

  • My OB sent me to PT for hip pain and sciatic nerve pain.  It helped a great deal until I was put on full time bedrest at 22w and not allowed to do my exercises anymore.  Then I was pretty much stuck with multiple pillows/Snoogle, plus some pain, unfortunately.  :-(

  • I get them too, but only if I lay on one side too long and its painful. It only happens when I'm laying on my left side too long and when I shift on my right, instead of my right hip hurting I get rib pains on that side! Anyhow like most of you I also sleep with a pillow between my legs but what I do is I fold the pillow in half so its raised up a little higher which makes a great difference instead of having the pillow flat out. Instead of placing it between my thighs I put it down a little towards my knees and to me, it feels much better and alleviating that way. When the pain gets too much for me I tell my husband to move closer to me (since he sleeps sideways, and I throw my leg over his hips and MAN the pain is lessen by a lot because I raise my legs high up on him and it may seem uncomfortable to visualize but it is comfortable cause I even catch myself breathing a long sigh of relief and I'm able to fall asleep. lol

  • Thanks so much for the advice.  I have a feeling I'm just going to have to try a few different things and see what might help.. nothing will magically make it stop, especially since I'm only 18 weeks!  I have a long way to go!

    Thanks!

  • If you are not on bedrest, I'd try to walk, stretch, do prenatal yoga... even doing something like that right before bed.  But not sure if it's the same kind of pain I had... sciatica, and also restless leg syndrome.  Drove me nuts.

  • I have this too. I was able to get relief for a few months by adding calcium chews daily. At this point everything hurts. Best of luck
