Donating question

With this being the season of ultimate deals, I have a question.  Can you donate new household items, at say a food pantry?

For example, Target has a decent electric mixer on sale for $3 on Black Friday.  It would be no sweat to add something like that to my cart.  But can I donate it? Has anyone ever done something like this?

Re: Donating question

  • Good question.  Do you know in particular where you'd be donating such items to?  They might have the best answer for you.  I'd be willing to bet different places would take different items.

  • I think the best places to donate those kind of home goods are places like battered women's shelters (they often make their own food there, or need supplies when the move into their own homes) or churches that have similar programs for families trying to get back on their feet.

If you aren't familiar with those programs in your area, you might be able to call the local DCFS office (Div. of Children & Family Services, or whatever it's called in your state) to get a listing of charities that need/accept those kinds of donations.

I hope you find a place to send it... it's nice to see people think outside of the box when it comes to donating for a good cause.  :)

This was a great response.  I'd look for a women's shelter if I were you =)

Thanks for your reply! A good friend works with DHS, so I will ask her. Yes

  • I'm pretty sure that the Salvation Army takes anything.  We gave them a couch once.

You're welcome, glad I could help!

And p.s. ... a $3 mixer?!  I've got to pay attention to these Black Friday sales!
