Are you getting the TDap??

Are you going to get the TDap vaccine for your LO? I think I am next week. Her pedi recommended it. If you got it, did you have any side effects?

  • I received it in the hospital before being discharged.  I had no ill effects but I was a human pin cushion by that point too.

My husband got it - no issues.  My mom got it and her arm is really sore but that is probably due to the tetanus part of the shot.

  • DD received hers at 2 months with no side effects.

  • We do a traditional vaccine schedule.  This TDap contains the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine and it is VERY important that your child gets this.  Pertussis in an infant is very dangerous, particularly so in a preemie.  You, your partner and anyone who will have extended contact with should also get it.  Pertussis is now a big problem and can make your baby very sick.  Your child is not fully protected after the first shot which is why it is important to have the adult caregivers be immunized.  I had Pertussis (I am a teacher and caught it from a student) and I was out of work for over a week and was sicker than I have ever been (other than hellp syndrome).  I can not imagine what it would do to an infant.

  • Jack will be getting his first dose next week. I am a huge advocate for vaccines. The side effects are rarely worse that the disease being immunized against.

ETA: Tdap is for adults. Dtap is for children. Same vaccine, different dosage.

  • DS had it on the traditional schedule with no complications.

Please vaccinate; as Ellasmom said, pertussis is a very serious disease. It has made a HUGE comeback lately due to people not getting the vaccine. It claims lives every year.

Side effects typically range from soreness at the injection site to fever. What's important to realize is that the side effects are almost always very mild and indicate that the body is reacting to the vaccine in an appropriate manner. The disease itself claimed 5 infants just this past summer in CA. https://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/24/us/24cough.html

ETA: I just realized you're asking about vaccinating yourself. I got a booster as did DH. Anyone with extended contact with your child should get it.

  • Yes I am talking about TDap...for adults. I am getting it next week and was just wondering what other moms have gotten it. I keep asking my parents and sis to get a flu shot and the TDap, but I dont think they will. They are the only other ppl in contact with DD other than me and DH...I don't think DH is even getting any bc he is never sick. I don't think that's a great excuse, but I can't force anyone to get them. Anyway, jw about the TDap!
  • I got it when I was in the hospital after having the twins. No side effects :)

Aww I see! I was confused by the wording of the OP. Yes, I got the Tdap when I was in the hospital. My arm was sore for a few days but other than that no side effects.
