Antibiotics are often what kickstarts thrush, so that's not what your doc will give to treat it. (Unless s/he doesn't know anything.)
There are a few things you can try:
Gentian violet, Grapefruit Seed Extract (you can take in a pill form, and/or make a solution to apply to lo's mouth and your nipples) a few girls here also had some good results with Apple Cider Vinegar.
Eating yogurt or taking probiotics is also a good idea.
I don't think you necessarily need to see your pedi unless these remedies don't work. We battled yeast for about three months, until we got Diflucan from the doctor. If you do however, need something prescription, make sure you get something from the pedi, AND your OB or reg. doctor. You need to be treated simultaneously.
I've been taking acidophillus tablets and using Apple Cider Vinegar.
The apple cider vinegar works really well. Just use a q-tip and apply it to your nipples and inside baby's mouth. (Dilute it with water as pure acv burn like you wouldn't believe on yeast...learned that the hard way!)
Tea tree oil works really well too, but you have to wash it off well before baby nurses, as it's not really made to be ingested. I actually have Giovanni shampoo...the one with TTO...and when I take my shower I later up my nipples with it and try to keep it on there until I'm done with my shower and then wash it off. It seems to help.
They say sunlight helps, but I'm not willing to go outside topless. lol
I've had thrush twice in the past almost 7 months... my post partum doula actually diagnosed it and recommended Dr. Jack Newman's protocol which consists of all purpose nipple cream, gentian violet, grapefruit seed extract, probiotics, etc. I ended up doing all that in combo with 3 rounds of diflucan! you can read more about Dr. Newman's protocol here:
