Two Under 2

was were lo #1 off bottle before lo #2 came home?

Ds just turned 1 and we are switching to whole milk in sippy cup. Im a little concerned about him having jealously bottle issues when lo #2 arrives in 2 months. Anyone have advice or similiar experience?

Re: was were lo #1 off bottle before lo #2 came home?

  • I breastfed both girls, so we never did bottles.  DD # 1 was using a sippy cup and eating what we ate when DD # 2 was born, but they are 16 months apart.

    DD # 1 was never jealous about DD # 2 BF'ing.

  • DD still had a nap time bottle until she was 20 mo. old. DS was born when she was 18 & 1/2 mo old so I had about 6 weeks of double bottle washing. I just told her "Bottles are for the baby now and you are a big girl. You are such a big helper by giving your bottles to the baby"....she switched to all sippy w/ no problem.

  • Natalie is off bottles (and was before Dominic came home), but she steals his bottles when he is finished with them.   She thinks she's sneaky.    Other than that, she's not overly concerned about bottles.  She weaned herself off of them.
  • DD still gets her bedtime bottle.  She was a little upset when she saw her baby brother getting his first bottle but I gave her a sippy of milk and she did just fine.  We haven't had a meltdown since.  She does like to talk and point to his bottle when he is eating and I tell her, that is for baby, big girls get milk in their sippy.  I just always make sure she has a sippy of water or milk when I feed him.
  • Mine will be 16 months apart.

I really made an effort to get DD away from the bottle early (right after her first birthday) because I didn't want her to see the new baby and regress because we had just switched her.  She hasn't had a bottle in 3.5 months so I'm hoping things will go smoothly when baby 2 gets here.

I will be nursing mostly but I'm sure the new baby will get a bottle a few times per week.  I haven't nursed DD since she was 7 months so I don't anticipate that making her jealous (other than the fact that I am holding him).

Bottom line... I worked harder than most of my friend with kids my age to get rid of bottles early.  Many of my friend's 16 month olds are still getting a bottle at night or in the morning.  Not us! :)

  • Mine are 16.5 months apart, and yes DS1 was off bottles before DS2 was born. We stopped the day time bottles right after his first birthday, but he still got a morning and night time bottle. Then when he was about 13 months we took away the morning bottle, and then at about 14.5 months we took away the night time bottle. So he was off bottles for about 2 months when DS2 came home. But that is a long time in the life of a baby. DS1 didnt care about DS2's bottles. He never wanted them and never showed jealousy. Good luck!
  • Yes. We practiced a lot before-hand, and switched fully when DD1 turned one. Two months later when DD2 came, it wasn't an issue. #1 took her bottle and tried it once, but it was too slow and the formula was not as good as milk, so she never went back for more.
