Natural Birth

Acupuncture Induction Scheduled

If anyone has had any luck with acupuncture inductions, please let me know how it turned out!  I'm scheduled for Thursday. I'm 39wks, my dr wants to induce at 39-40wks bc of GD, as we've talked about in other posts.  I've heard it takes anywhere between a few hours and a few days, if it works. The acupuncturist that I'm going to was suggested by my doula, and word is that his last patient had a two hour birth.  I never thought I'd say this, but.. bring on the needles!

I'll post how it turns out, but I'm optomistic, bc I had a hot stone massage last wk followed by an hour of Chinese Reflexology and I had some contractions after that.  I'm hoping that we can get things started naturally so I can avoid a medicated induction.  I had fajitas for lunch and jalepeno (sp?) sausage appetizer last night... so far, spicy food just makes the baby feel like dancing.

Re: Acupuncture Induction Scheduled

  • GL!  I don't have any experience with acupuncture inductions (yet), but I have had acupuncture before, and you don't even really feel the needles, just in case you were worried about that!  I'm interested to hear how it goes for you, since I'm likely to be in the same boat (I also have GD and they want the baby to come a bit early if possible).

  • Thanks!   I had head you don't really feel them, but it's reassuring to hear it again!  I will let you know!  If you don't see a post from me by Friday, just assume I'm in L&D having a 2hr birth!!! ;)
  • I did acupuncture!  I went every week, but it took going 3 days straight to get things going!

    GL!

  • I went to acupuncture to help treat my PCOS. The needles definitely don't hurt. I actually found it very relaxing, although I don't know if it will be as relaxing 39 weeks pregnant laying on your side.

  • I had acupuncture weekly from 32w and then 4 acupuncture induction treatments at 40w6d, 41w1d, 41w3d, and 41w5d.  I was medically induced at 41w6d so it didn't work per se however, active labor was only 4 hours so I think all the acupuncture treatments may still have helped in their own way.

I should also say that the induction treatment is quite a bit different than regular acupuncture.  The needles were hooked up to some kind of electro-stimulation device to increase the intensity.  It doesn't hurt, but it's definitely different than a regular acupuncture session.

  • I had an acupuncture treatment while I was in labor (water broke, was GBS+ and wanted to get things going). I don't think it was an induction type treatment but please give us more details once you've been for one.

    And good luck!

  • I was 40w and had it done on a Friday and Saturday and I went into labor early on Tuesday.  Maybe I would have gone into labor anyway, I don't know, but it was really relaxing.  I brought my hypnobirthing music and just listened to that, it was great.  My labor was 17 1/2 hours though, so I don't think it helped with the length of it.
  • Yeah, definitely let us know!  My chiro does acupuncture and I'm willing to give it a try this time around for sure since I was induced with an AROM at 41w6d last time.  I'd like to avoid that again!
