Houston Babies

Dermatologist needed

It turns out that Evan has very sensitive skin like his daddy and seems to brake out into rashes on his face, arms, and legs for no apparent reason. DH wants to get him seen by a dermatologist soon so we can avoid/prevent a lot of the problems he had growing up.

Any suggestions? Bonus points if it is in Sugar Land or near the Galleria.

TIA!

Re: Dermatologist needed

  • My only rec is a regular Derm Dr (Dr Gerber at Bellaire Derm Associates).  but I wonder if there are actual pediatric dermatologist out there.

Have you been monitoring what he's eating and noticing the bumps after a certain food item?  Ally got/gets bumps everytime she eats a lot of rice.  But was confirmed on Friday that she's not allergic to rice but Dr said not to rule it out and just monitor her before and after she eats it.

Ally had severe baby acne/ezcema when she was about 4 weeks old and lasted for over a month.  It was horrible and all over her face and body.  Dr suspected dairy allergy (but in the end, she's still on dairy formula and her skin is good now).  What I did was use the Baby Aveeno soothing relief bath and put it in warm water for her bath.  And then RIGHT after her bath while she's still damp, I apply the Baby Aveeno soothing relief lotion all over her face and body.  I didn't rub it in, I pretty much let it soak into her skin.  And for the really bad areas, I then add aquaphor on top of that.   I did this for about a week and it finally improved a lot.  I'm starting it up again now since it may be a winter/dry air thing and she's starting to get bumps on her chin.

If it has eczema, it always gets worst during the winter time because of dry skin.  But also watch for any potential food allergies.

  • We actually need to see a Dermatologist as well. Our pediatrician gave us two names:

James F Nigro (board certified in peds and derm) - Southwest Memorial 713.981.4444

David W Powell (board certified in derm, but sees pediatric patients) - Sugar Land 281.4944.0050

Another thing is ask your pediatrician for some names because some Dermatologists will ask who your general pediatrician is and then call them first.

I need to call this week to make an appointment. Have not met any of the physicians mentioned above.

  • Thanks for the names and advice!

Evan still refuses solids (at 8 months old) so the only thing he ingests is formula and some apple juice in his bottle to help with constipation. He has been on this for at least 2 1/2 months.

We have been using Aquaphor and the Aveeno Baby Eczema lotion but it hasn't helped much. I think his rash is from drool, but DH isn't sure because almost every morning we find more rashes in different places, but none are on his torso. Weird.

We'll call his doctor tomorrow and see if we can get any referrals.

    Thanks again!

  • It could be the lotion.  Burt's Bees baby lotion and the J&J baby lotion both gave Cooper random patchy rashes.  We switched to Burt's Bees baby oil instead and all was well.  We're currently using Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream (the one in the jar) after we tried it at MIL's house and so far it's great.  (And I love using it on my hands too!)
