Baby Names

Changed spelling

It's been a continuous debate since we decided to use the name Bryony. For a couple of months it was Briony and I ordered her a monogrammed Xmas stocking to match the 3 we already have. Well, said stocking came in the mail and DH said it just looked 'weird'. So, we just changed it to Bryony, which is what I wanted in the first place. Mainly because people were pronouncing it Bree-uh-knee when we want her to be Bry-uh-knee. So now I get to throw out the stocking and re-order it, lol. But I guess that's what it took to finally finalise this name!

Re: Changed spelling

  • I prefer it spelled Briony and I would pronounce it the way you intend. I think Bryony seems a little odd. Just my two cents, though.

  • That's good that you got to change it to a spelling that you and your husband both like before it went on the birth certificate.

I'm sorry to be negative, but I have to say that with both spellings, I thought it was Bree-oh-knee until I got to your pronunciation part at the end.  You may be correcting a lot of people!

    Agree.
  • It's OK, I expect to have to correct people for the next 20yrs or so! It's just not a common name here at all (I'm from the UK). I preferred Briony at first. But that is more open to interpretation in pronounciation. And it's 'correct' spelling (it's a plant), and the spelling used by the Royal Navy, is Bryony.

  • I prefer Briony as well.
  • First of all, I L-O-V-E Briony, but DH won't go for it. I also prefer the spelling Briony. For such a classic, distinct name, I think an extra y takes away all the charm and you might as well just name her Kayleigh or Kaytlynn. Don't dumb your name down for the uneducated masses! If you are intelligent enough to know how the name is properly spelled, then do it!

  • Hate any added "y" so I much prefer Briony.

I think no matter what way you spell it you are going to have to correct people, so I would go with this one!

I think you'll have to correct alot of people no matter how you spell it so I would just use this spelling!

  • I much prefer Briony and I have no idea why anyone would be pronounce it Bree instead of Br-eye. I looks similar to the name BRIAN and everyone knows how to say that one. I'm just not a fan of the 'y' in the middle spelling. Plus, the character in Atonement spelled it Briony and I think a lot of people would be familiar with the pronunciation because of that movie and book.

  • Well, Bryony is the original, with Briony being a variant.

And Brie uh nee is how to pronounce it - Bry uh nee makes it sound like a brine. But if you're okay correcting everyone forever, then go for it.

And if you're set on winning this battle, Bryony is probably your best bet. I don't think you're going to win though. :)

  • I like the name, but I've always seen Briony, I think. So you're saying you're from the UK and it's more common there, right? The only thing that would dissuade me from using it is that it's VERY uncommon in the US. Love it, though.
