Babies: 6 - 9 Months

when to worry about not pooping?

When DD was EBF she still pooped a lot - multiple times a day. Since starting solids it's down to once a day or so. She hasn't pooped since Wednesday. She seems to be trying but with no luck. I stopped giving her cereal and dairy to see if that would help. She eats a lot of fruit and veggies. I'll call her pedi tomorrow I guess?

  • We are in the same poopless boat here Sad. Last night while I was feeding the poor little guy he was pushing and his face was turning red!! Went to check his diaper after hearing what I thought was some very productive noise coming from down below... NOTHING!!! Flase alarm. I'm going to get some prunes today b/c that helped the last time. If that doesn't work by tomorrow sometime I think I'll call the pedi too.

  • Keep doing what you're doing (cut bananas & cereal, increase P fruits). If LO is not in pain, EBF babies are good for 10 days. If you want, you can try the thermometer trick (take temp rectally to stimulate poop). Also keep LO upright with legs Froggied and give tummy rubs. GL

  • 10 days?  i don't know about that.  i've talked to my pedi's office a few times and one nurse said you definitely don't want to go more then 5 days.  ideally more like once every 3 days.  i tried EVERYTHING...prunes, pears, prune juice, rectal temp, warm baths, bicycle exercises, tummy rubs, mylicon (i know is for gas but USED to make LO poop).  problem is i can't get LO to eat enough prunes/pears to help.  so yesterday my pedi said we should get glycerin suppositories and do one every 24 hours til she poops.  luckily she pooped about 30 mins after i got off the phone with them.  but they also told me to NOT stop giving her cereal because she needs to get used to it.  and to try baby apple juice with some prune juice mixed in if she'll drink it.  regularly to keep her regular.  several times a day or so.

  • I would call the Pedi tomorrow if there is no action.

If you've been using Rice Cereal you may want to stop for good. We switched from Rice Cereal to Oatmeal and overall my son seems to digest it much better. Rice cereal was just blocking him up.

I was wondering if this would help. We've done "P" foods, coincidentally, for the last couple of days (peaches, peas, pears) but he seemed a little more hungry so I gave him an extra 1/2 TBS of rice cereal with it... oops Embarrassed.

  • oatmeal might help but it didn't make a difference for us.  we've been eating oatmeal the whole time and she doesn't really eat a whole lot of it but she's pooped maybe 2 or 3 times in the past 2 weeks.  yikes!  i mean, i would certainly try it instead of rice if i were you, but for EBF babies anything besides BM is going to be an adjustment in terms of digestion.  i would definitely try to add Prunes to your "P" foods.  :o

  • LO eats oatmeal, not rice, and only occasionally since we BLW. Basically just whenever I have breastmilk handy in the fridge. She did have it 2 days in a row (Wed and Thurs, I think). She's been eating pear and peach (along with melon) for breakfast regularly. I didn't know about "P" foods, but luckily she likes those 2. She had a prune this morning, but I'll have to get some pureed prune or juice or something b/c the size/stickiness of a prune isn't ideal for her to eat herself. I'm just hoping it's today while DH is home. :P
