All of this diaper bag talk got me thinking. Do I really need one? Can I just use a big purse instead of having to buy something new?
I had a diaper bag w/DS#1 and used it- but then got a big "executive" purse for work and started putting everything in there. By the time I had DS#2, and 2 under 2... I was exclusively using my big purse and NO diaper bag!
All of this diaper bag talk got me thinking. Do I really need one? Can I just use a big purse instead of having to buy something new?
I had a diaper bag for DD but switched to a backpack when she was about 9 months(we were going on vacation and DH wouldn't carry the diaper bag) I love using a backpack and probably won't even use the diaper bag this time around
I have switched diaper bags a few times over two years. I started w/ a JuJuBe, and I still love that. But then I found a big StorkSak at TJ Maxx, so that became my main bag, and the JuJu was my 'short trip' bag. Then a friend got me a small Vera Bradley bag for Christmas, and DD was older so I started using that. Now DD has her own backpack, so I pack essentials in there, and then keep the StorkSak in the car packed of all the 'extras'. I clearly can't pick just one, LOL.
All of this diaper bag talk got me thinking. Do I really need one? Can I just use a big purse instead of having to buy something new?
Nope. I never used one. I used a big, black quilted tote bag with leather trim and handles. I still use it for my work bag. Diaper bags are unnecessary IMO. You just need a bag big enough to carry everything, and you can buy a diaper changing mat cheap and separately.
This is the bag I used ... you can see my teacher's manuals inside, like I said, it was a decent size and nice enough to have lasted almost 5 years after being used as a diaper bag and now a work bag!
I used my lonchamp bag (the larger tote) and bought one of those organizers that you can put in your bags. I just bought double stick velcro so the organizer wouldn't move around. Worked like a charm!
All of this diaper bag talk got me thinking. Do I really need one? Can I just use a big purse instead of having to buy something new?
Of course! I have a Longchamp bag that I sometimes use as a diaper bag.
This.
I have a Skip Hop pronto changing wallet, and keep that in there plus all the other extras and it works great! It is easier with a toddler though- def less "stuff"!

Personally, I love the diaper bag. It is more durable and easier to clean. Also - I use the detachable changing pad ALL THE TIME. I like that there are pockets for the wipes case and diapers.
When I go for a run - I usually throw just a diaper, changing pad, and wipes in the basket and leave the rest.

You don't really need one, I personally like all the separate compartments that diaper bags have. It took me 3.5 years to find my perfect diaper bag...it looks more like a purse then a diaper bag. But the inside lined so if spills happen, it's easy to clean.

I have done both, and I found the for my personally, all the extra pockets in a diaper bag is nice to have. And the one I have now has insulated pockets for milk/sippys and my insulin which is a double score for me.

You said anything...how many people actually poop while in labor? Any of you? Who is afraid of that. I'm already afraid of that...
I did with DD#1, but I did not with DD#2. So it doesn't happen every time! Also, I didn't even notice...my husband was the one that told me that I did. I had no idea!
How do you know whent to stop BF? For us, I just dried out. I would have kept going if I could my supply up.
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? I'm not sure, we just use the Avent bottles and nipples.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? Ask around, things like a wipes warmer are completely unnecessary IMHO, but others might disagree.
How do choose a pediatrician? I always ask my friends/family for recommendations.
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? DD#1 spent her first night(s) with my ILs at about 4-5 months. DH and I had to go to an OOT wedding for a dear friend.
You said anything...how many people actually poop while in labor? Any of you? Who is afraid of that. I'm already afraid of that...
With DS#1, I was induced at 37w and had an emergency c-section before I even got to push. Obviouslly no poop there.
With DS#2, I tried for a VBAC, had no drugs, and pushed for an hour before another emergency c-section. During that hour I was pushing, I swear the nurse brought a new pad/towel/cloth over and put it under me- I couldn't smell anything, no one said anything, DH was up at the top by my head so he didn't say, smell, or notice anything. It really was all a blur and while you're pushing, no one cares and no one notices. IF I did poop, they were so discrete about it and hush-hush- they chaged the towels and stuff, I THINK, but besides that, no other "proof" that I pooped... and again, if I did, it wasn't an issue at all!

How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents?
1. I stopped when my milk dried up (2 weeks pp. grumble) but I think you just "know" when the time is right, but I could be totally wrong.
2. We used an avent bottle since it attached right to the pump, but he hated it so we swiched to Nuk bottles and nipples and he loved them.
3. Honestly, all you really "need" is a place for baby to sleep, eat, and diapers. Plus a car seat. But I loved having a swing. the bouncer thing was useless to us, (and we had 2!) he hated it.A bobby is super nice to have, and we have both a jogging and regular stroller. Also, we found using the sink for baths was so much easier until he could sit up more.
4. Our first pedi was also my OB, she was amazing and it was great having her there for both of us. Our second was a douche bag who I hated, and I finally just moved us all to a family doc when he turned a year and i don't regret it at all.
5. That is your call. I think when baby can use a bottle, and I think baby will be ready before you are

How do you know whent to stop BF? DEPENDS ON THE PERSON. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. YOU STOP WHEN YOU FEEL IT IS BEST FOR THE BABY AND YOU.
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? YOU DON'T REALLY "KNOW". EVERYONE HAS PREFERENCE, BUT I WOULD NOT STOCK UP ON ANY ONE KIND UNTIL BABY IS HERE. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT HIS/HER NIPPLE PREFERENCE WILL BE, OR IF HE/SHE WILL HAVE REFLUX AND NEED CERTAIN BOTTLES. BUY A COUPLE DIFFERENT KINDS, TRY THEM OUT AND SEE IF BABY HAS A PREFERENCE OR NEED.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? YOU DON'T REALLY. HONESTLY 90% OF EVERYTHING THEY SAY YOU *NEED*, YOU ACTUALLY DO NOT. BABIES DO NOT NEED MUCH. MOST OF THE STUFF IS JUST EXTRAS, OR PERSONAL PREFERENCE. BEST ADVICE IS TO REGISTER WITH SOMEONE WHO IS ALREADY A MOM AND YOU ARE CLOSE IN PERSONALITY WITH -THEY CAN HELP WALK YOU THROUGH IT.
How do choose a pediatrician? I PICKED BASED ON FRIEND'S REFERENCE AND PRACTICE REPUTATION. SOME PEOPLE "INTERVIEW" PEDS TO SEE IF PERSONALITY FITS. I SAW NO NEED. I ASKED FRIENDS WHO I RESPECTED FOR THEIR PED, RESEARCHED THE DOCTORS AND OFFICES, ASKED MY OB ....
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? AGAIN, WHEN YOU AND DH FEEL IT IS OKAY. MY DD IS ALMOST 5 AND HAS NEVER SLEPT SOMEWHERE WITHOUT US. BUT THAT IS ME ... WE ALSO DO NOT HAVE FAMILY NEARBY, SO IT IS NOT REALLY POSSIBLE. I ALSO HAD NEVER SPENT A NIGHT AWAY FORM DD UNTIL THIS LAST SUMMER - WHEN SHE WAS 4.5. BUT THAT IS ME. SOME PEOPLE HAVE BABY AT GRANDMA'S FROM A VERY EARLY AGE. YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH
How do you know whent to stop BF? When your boobs feel empty! They will feel full and be hard- when they turn soft, saggy, and "feel" empty- you're done. Also, sometimes baby is full and is done with you!
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? I pumped, I used medela storage bags and poured them into Playtex drop-ins bottles. I liked the playtex bottles since there was less cleaning adn they are BPA free- I just poured the contents of the milk bags into the liner, hooked it up to the bottle and dropped it in the warmer.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? Trial and error. For baby#1, we bought so much crap and were gifted so much crap. A lot of it we used, a lot of it was useless. Also, each child is different. Things we used daily for DS#1, DS#2 wouldn't touch- and vice versa! For example, we used a diaper genie, pacifiers, wipes warmer and swaddle blankets/receiving blankets for DS#1. DS#2 HATED to be swaddled so we didn't use any swaddle or receiving blankets, he didn't take a paci, he liked his thump, he didn't care about the wipes warmer, and we just threw diapers in the garbage...
How do choose a pediatrician? We chose a clinic near our house since it was a convenient location to home and daycare. The clinic was affiliated with a large hosiptal with good rankings and a good reputation- it was also accepted by our insurance company. After we found the clinic, we went online to their website and looked at pictures/bios of the pediatricians- then we picked one. We went to one doc for about 9 months and had to see someone else in the clinic for an emergency- we ended up liking her better and switced over to her! We've been with her for almost 5 years now and will have had her for all 3 of our kids!
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? As an infant, 6 months old, we let DS#1 stay overnight with my DH's parents. I cried the whole time and worried. It wasn't until my DS#2 was born and DS#1 was already 2 that we let them stay with MY parents overnight, in OUR home, for a weekend- DH & I went to vegas, so MY mom and dad watched our 2 boys in our home- I felt better about that!
You said anything...how many people actually poop while in labor? Any of you? Who is afraid of that. I'm already afraid of that...
OMG!! I'm so glad you asked this! This is Hubby and I's first baby, and I am (for some weird reason) terrified of this! Hahahaha, I know it's silly, but I keep thinking about how embarrassing this will be. After reading some of the other post, though, I feel a little better about not even knowing, and that the docs/nurses were discrete about it!!! *Phew*
How do you know whent to stop BF? I couldn't handle pumping anymore. DD was 8 months.
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? I just bought the medela ones because I knew they fit the pump. I didn't like them and will be buying a different kind with this one.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? Personal experience from having lots of younger siblings.
How do choose a pediatrician? I always ask my friends/family for recommendations.
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? DD was 8 months old. She was pretty comfortable around them.
How do you know whent to stop BF? When it is right for you and your baby. It depends on so many things.
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? You don't really. We started with a variety (3 different types) and DS would only accept the one (Born Free). So we ended up buying more of those later on.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? To a certain extent, you don't. All kids are different, but in the beginning all you honestly need are your boobs, diapers, a carseat, and somewhere for them to safely sleep.
How do choose a pediatrician? I asked my OB's (with kids) who they take their kids to see. Then I went by geographical location (close to my house) and hospital affiliation.
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? People will give you different answers on this. Personally, I didn't leave DS overnight (at my parents') until he was 14 months. It just worked out that way. I probably would have been okay with it sooner, we just never did. I was also EBF'ing, so it made it more difficult to be away from him and we just didn't like to.

How do you know whent to stop BF? When it is right for you and your baby. It depends on so many things. I EBF'd for 12 months, and still nurse DS 1-2 times per day. I am hoping he will self wean...not sure if that will happen or if I am going to have to initiate soon. I think I am finally approaching being ready myself.

How do you know whent to stop BF? If it's working for you and your baby then I say go as long as you want to!!
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? We just tried a few as we went along, although DS was not picky at all.
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? You NEED: diapers, wipes, clothes and a place for your baby to sleep. Everything else you just figure out as you go
How do choose a pediatrician? We went off of recommendations from friends. I didn't do interviews or anything and we are very happy with our pedi.
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? I think DS was 6 months old but it just depends on what you want to do!
You said anything...how many people actually poop while in labor? Any of you? Who is afraid of that. I'm already afraid of that...
I pooped.... And I was so embarassed! They wiped my a$$ right in front of DH! Ish!
Edit... And I knew that I pooped, I even felt it through my epi... It stunk up the entire room...
Ditto. I was pushing for 4 hours before they gave me a C...I pooped and it smelled so bad I threw up. Repeatedly. It was so gross. They say you won't know, but you know. If I go for a VBAC this time, I'm totally opting for the enema.
How do you know whent to stop BF? 13 mo DS didnt see as interested anymore & he was more interested in actual food.
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? We went through a ton of bottles and nipples. DS wouldnt take a bottle so well but when he did we used playtex drop in ...also really easy to use with BM and pumping
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? All you need is love...hehe.. you dont need alot of nb or 0-3 month clothes. Sleepers and onsies work great.
How do choose a pediatrician? Its the one my brothers & sisters used. She is great!!
How old is old enough to spend the night with grandparents? When you feel comfy leaving them. With us it was over a yr old.
You said anything...how many people actually poop while in labor? Any of you? Who is afraid of that. I'm already afraid of that...
I did not poop although I totally understand why people do. Pushing out a baby can kind of feel like taking a big ****. I did however get hemmorhoids, which fortunately cleared up after about a week. Totally wasn't expecting that, but pushing out an 8lb baby in 25 minutes kind of puts some strain on the system.

Yeah, I had heard about pooping during labor before DD was born but never thought about hemorrhoids. I was kind of blindsided by that one.
I'm guessing I didn't poop. I asked DH and he said he didn't think so and he would definitely tell me if he'd noticed. Kind of crazy if I didn't though because I ate the entire time I was in labor (we snuck in snacks). I didn't have any pain meds though and definitely didn't feel like I pooped.

LOL. With DD I was concerned about it, but while pushing my OB was like "BARE DOWN", and im trying to push down, but obviously wasn't doing it the right way. Just make sure you go #2 before going to the hopsital.
How do you know whent to stop BF? When you feel ready, or your babe self weans (whichever happens first)
How do you know what type of bottle/nipple to buy if you plan to pump? Try a few, some babes are picky so be prepared to try several if this is the case
How do you know what all you will need and what's optional? Depends on you, your babe and your lifestyle, talk to mums that you know and who know you.
How do choose a pediatrician? Can't answer that one, we have one for our entire area and have to get a referral from our family Doc, or show up in the ER to see her.
