Cloth Diapering

Sore red bottom: Poop is evil

Last night I felt like the worst mommy ever. DS pooped three times yesterday and each time his little bottom got redder and redder. We use boudreaux's butt cream and fleece liners to protect the diapers.

Right before bed I was trying to clean him up and he was screaming bloody murder and shaking because it hurt. Made me feel like a big meanie!

Is his skin just super sensitive? When we started the cloth we were told we wouldn't have to use diaper cream but haven't had any luck with that.

The Dr recommended Maalox and cold cream mixed one to one to cure the sore bottom and that does work.

Re: Sore red bottom: Poop is evil

  • Has he started solids? DD never had a rash until we started solids, now her poops make her bottom red and rashy. When it happens I clear it up with Arbonne diaper rash cream. It works in one change. I keep her butt slathered in CJs BUTTer at every change and it helps keep the rashes at bay, but if I forget the BUTTer and she poops, its rash city.

  • The same thing happens to my son.  I try to change him right after he poops and use a little California Baby diaper cream.  Using fitteds or prefolds (w/ a stay dry fleece liner) and a breathable cover, either fleece or wool, for a day really seems to help.

  • Is he teething?  My nephews (who I watch every day) both had terrible rashes like this when they were teething, it's the only time that either of them had a rash like this.  The only thing that helped them was Weleda diaper rash cream and the teeth finally coming in.

*oops - this was supposed to be for the other diaper rash post, but I guess it would apply here too.

  • I was going to suggest teething as the PP did. As a pediatric nurse I see it time and time again  -- teething tends to bring on terrible diaper rashes.  Just a thought! :)
