C-Section? GD and u/s showing big baby?

Hi,

I have have been managing GD for the last 10 weeks.  My post-meal numbers have always been good but I've been on long-acting insulin for my fasting numbers, which I can't do much to control.

My OB hadn't been concerned with me having a big baby as I have been measuring (according to fundal height) on or even a week or so behind for the past few weeks.  He wasn't overly concerned about sending me for an u/s but I asked him about it and I went for one today.  Everything was measuring okay but the current weight is estimated at 4.4 kg (9.7lbs).  I'm not scheduled for an induction until next Thursday (I'll be 39w3d).  Now, I definitely know u/s measurements can be off by a few lbs but in combination with my GD I'm a little worried about a 10+lb baby.  Unfortunately my OB won't see the u/s report from today until Tuesday when he's back in the office again.

Just wondering how many mama's with GD are scheduled for a c-section based on predicted size?  I'm not scared of a c-section, I worry more about being in labour for 24+++ hours and then having a c-section.

Thanks for any experience/advice!

Re: C-Section? GD and u/s showing big baby?

  • DS measured at 42 weeks  on the ultrasound when I was 38 weeks. my fundal measurements were right on track.  He was 9lbs 4 oz.  I got induced at 39 weeks.  they broke my water to start it and I had him 1 hour and 40 min later with minimal tearing.  Big babies sound scary, but I think most women can handle it.  My sister's last baby was almost 11 lbs delivered vaginally and she didn't have GD.  Some babies are big with or without GD.

  • Wow!  11lbs!  That is a big baby.  I think with GD they have a big concern about the size of the shoulders and getting stuck since they have a tendency to grow proportionally larger than babies born to mothers without GD...  I haven't read much about it though.  My lovely Scottish great grandmother had 5 children, all between 12-14.5 lbs. with no drugs.  I can't imagine.

I'm due to be induced at 39w3d.

  • I just wanted to offer some support. Its so hard with all the unknowns and can be truly scary. I was measuring a couple weeks ahead with DS due to GD and was induced at 39 weeks as to prevent any complications with having a "big" baby. DS was born vaginally 6lbs 9oz. It was a shock to me and my OB we thought I was having such a big baby but I didn't. So I just wanted to say I remember having the same concerns as you and it totally sucks but anything can happen. Good luck!

  • I didn't have GD with DS, however growth u/s and all the doc's that felt my belly were all SURE he was well over 10lbs.  This (and mild pre e) are why I was induced, and ended up with an 8lb baby.

  • My OBs are more worried about the fact that he's measuring really broad than how heavy he is.  GD babies can often grow differently have very broad shoulders and get stuck.  I've had 2 growth scans in the last 6 weeks and he's measured 95% for both of them.  If I make it to Monday, I have another one then but they're pretty sure a c-section is the safest route.  I've been measuring about 4 weeks ahead due to all my swelling and extra fluid and LO is measuring about 2 weeks ahead.  That may be one reason why they wanted a growth scan to start with, and then repeat ones.  Not sure why your OB didn't want one.

I'm thinking he wasn't overly concerned since I was actually measuring behind or right on over the last several weeks.  I think if I had been measuring large, he would have been more concerned.  At 38w3d I measured 36.5 weeks, so I guess it didn't set off any alarm bells.  I wish I didn't have to wait until Tues/Wed to find out more.

  • I had GD with DS and he measured very large the entire time. We were concerned about the size of his head and his shoulders, etc. I had a scheduled c/s due to his size and the fact that I was not favorable for induction.  He was born at 38 weeks and weighed 8 lbs 8 oz.  I had my daughter 2 days ago (I did not have GD this time - technically) she weighed 9 lbs 13.5 oz at 38 weeks.
