Similac ready to feed VS powdered formula

Besides the obvious, are there any other differences between the two?   I am BFing but want to start incorporating formula to get ready for when I go back to work.

Does one have more vitamins? Is one easier to digest? I'm assuming powder is much cheaper --  any other differences besides convenience?

I got 2 RTF for 99 cents b/c of coupon and a sale, so didn't know if I should get a few more of those while on sale.... but then didn't know if mixing RTF and powder was going to be a big deal.

Thanks :)

  • They are essentially the same, but for some reason DD does better with the powder. She burps better with the powder than the RTF. And if I switch back and forth between the 2 she has more gas than usual and her poop consistency changes a little bit. Try one for a while and then try the other and see if it makes a difference for your LO. It might not :)

  • Thanks.  That was helpful.

  • I have tried several times and my son can only tolerate the RTF. Every time I try the powder he is very gassy and his burps almost smell soured.

  • We like the powder because when she gets a little constipated I just add a little more water and it helps her have a movement.  I also found it more convenient to make a bottle with the powder in the middle of the night.  I'd bring the powder & bottle with water up to her nursery whereas if I had the RTF that needs to stay refrigerated and I would have to go downstairs to the kitchen.

This. Not only is there a major price difference, but the refrigeration. We got some RTF from the hospital after he was born (before the recall) and I noticed no difference.

  • For us, we found that he tolerated the RTF better and seemed more satisfied when we transitioned from BFing to FFing.  The RTF is more money and it does have to be refrigerated but it works for us.
