High-Risk Pregnancy

Heparin and labor risks?

I was wondering what increased risks there are during delivery since I am on heparin to maintain my pregnancy. I did a quick google search and did not find out a whole lot. what have you read, and what sources did you use? Thanks.

Re: Heparin and labor risks?

  • No sources to share just experience. I actually stopped the night before I was induced. Went in the next day at 5 and had DD the next morning at 9:20 and was back on Lovenox that afternoon. No problems at all. OB and Hemo said that it is not as stable so if I went in to labor on my own it is something they could safely work with that is why they have you switch from Lovenox to Heparin in my case as labor got closer. Most of my info came from my hemo and my mom's hemo back home both I trust a lot!

  • Agree with previous post.  I'm not concerned being on Heparin and going into labor, I'm concerned she may decide to come early while i'm on Lovenox still and we have some type of complication and they have to do a c-section.  I know this is one of those extreme situations but I asked my OB anyway and she said if that were to happen, we'd have to knock you out completely for the c-section.  That's my biggest fear with the injections and timing.
  • Same as the last 2 posters. I'm on Lovenox now, but will switch to Heparin closer to my due date. Dr. is planning on inducing me a week early to avoid problems but I'm still worried about going earlier than that. I think there is medication they can give you to kind of reverse the effects of the blood thinners if need be, not exactly sure though.
  • My OB had me switch over to Heparin really early on like around 32 weeks or so with two shots a day instead of the daily shot of Lovenox. Heparin has a shorter half life but there is still a risk of too much bleeding. I had a scheduled c-section on a Tuesday morning and took my last shot of Heparin on Sunday night and I still bled too much. They did have to give me a shot of something to slow down the bleeding. It worked and I had no other complications.
  • I switched over to Heparin at week 36 and had my last dose the morning of day my induction was started (went in at 6pm to get cytotec).  I was okay by 5am the next morning to get my epidural (needs to be roughly 24hrs after your last dose).  They checked my INR/prothrombin time to make I was okay to get it.  I ended up with a c-section, since DD was face-up, and didn't have any bleeding problems at all.  Started back on Lovenox at post-op day 2.  Only 2 more weeks of that left!

    GL!

  • So no one went into labor naturally? Were you all either induced or had a C-section? I am looking forward to just naturally progressing into my labor i.e. water breaking while at home and running to the door with my bag. Also, I have a great due date of January 1st. So, I was looking forward to my DD being the New Year's baby. But, I guess that will not be happening? :-(
