Strangled/Suffocated by Swaddle?

Has anyone heard of this happening or is it just an irrational fear of mine? I am constantly checking the baby at night and worrying. LO squirms down into the swaddle quite a bit and I have tried different types of swaddles to prevent this. In reality, she's never gotten the blanket/swaddle above the mouth. Have I gone nuts or do others worry about this, too?

  • I feel like my swaddle blanket is 100x's safer than having a loose blanket covering her.

Of course. I agree 100%. This is why I wonder if I am too paranoid.

BTW- I LOVED the name Hadley when picking names!

  • I have totally worried about the same thing. I try to reassure myself by saying that i have never heard of this happening. But I am an over-worrier.
  • I did the same thing the first few nights we swaddled lil ones. We have had no problems and I am finally a lil more relaxed. I usually just fold the upper part under to keep it away from her face.
  • I keep my LO's arms out of the swaddle because she was squirming to free them which was causing even the tightest swaddle to loosen and move too close to her face.  She likes to have her arms free.

  • When I swaddle LO I make sure that the blanket isn't close to her mouth or neck. I tuck the blanket so her neck and face is exposed. That way I know she's safe while sleeping.

  • Try the "Swaddle-Me" blanket wraps... they fit nice and snug and have no chance of going over the head or mouth - they are great! :)
  • I have this EXACT same fear. I feel way safer using the swaddle wraps than the blankets, and I really like the Kiddopotamus wraps we use, but it still freaks me out. I don't think they are likely to move up over her mouth, but she moves around quite a bit at this point and sometimes the wrap rides up around her shoulders a bit, so I pull it down. It stays below her mouth, but it still scares me, so I always fold the top of the wrap down as well. I am getting better about not being so worried over it... for the first few weeks I regularly got up to check that she wasn't being smothered, even when she was fast asleep and I really should have been doing the same.
  • I was going to suggest the same as PPs...have you looked into using swaddling wraps instead of blankets? I had this same fear with blankets because DD would always fidget to the point they covered her face--and DH wrapped those things tight.

People really seem to like Miracle Blankets (it's what we use, and I like it a lot), Swaddle Mes, Halo Sleep Sack Swaddles and Kiddopotamus.  HTH.
