Milk

In honor of Jen's post about sippy cups.  When did you guys start cow's milk?  I hear some people start before a year.  My pedi said wait until 1yr.  With that said my son is self weaning from his bottles.  he is down to 3 and some days refuses his 2nd one completely.  He is a great eater and loves self feeding.  He has always been "ahead" when it comes to eating and I have followed his lead.  I am getting the feeling he may be ready for milk.

When did you start?????  Thanks.

Re: Milk

  • I waited til his one year appt when she gave us the go-ahead, then started within a day or two. He did fine with it.

  • I waited until one year to really switch but she was having tastes here and there of milk - mostly from my cups.  She didn't do the switch all that well, nothing horrible but she wasn't a fan.  Just this week, she's started drinking more.

  • I switched her around 11 months. I just did the same for whole to low fat - switched in the last few weeks. I'm not sure if they will tell me to keep her on lowfat or switch to skim at her 2 year appt in a few weeks.

  • Switched cold turkey from formula to milk at 1 year...switched from whole to low fat at 2 years.  No problems...don't even think he noticed.

  • I started switching Annabelle to whole Milk around 11.5 months. I was mixing her formula and whole milk together. By the time I finished up with the container she seemed completely fine with the whole milk.

  • Our doc is a bit of a stickler about not starting or transitioning early.  She says she has seen too many kids who "gain adequate weight," but are actually nutritionally deficient if they stop breast milk and/or formula too early. For example, during the first year babies need a ton of Iron and cows milk doesn't have nearly enough.

Obviously if you switch over a few days/week early becasue you ran out of formula and don't want to buy more that is one thing.  But I would be careful about dropping formula (or breast milk) all together and transitioning to whole milk too early.  Or, if you do switch over to whole milk, you may want to discuss giving a vitamin/nutritional supplement with your doc.

  • Thank you for all your input.

A little more info:  DS drinks his morning and night bottle which totals 16-18 oz plus some in oatmeal, so he is getting 16-20 oz a day of formula.  I was thinking about adding a sippy of milk in the middle as he completely refuses is bottle during the day.  I have tried a lot of things/changes to get him to drink his afternoon bottle, but at this point with only 3wks left I feel it may be a lot more aggrevation for both of us then it is worth.  He eats a lot of fruits, veggies, and whole grains (for now :) I was thinking just adding the milk a few sips here and there in addition to what he is drinking/eating now.

He will not drink formula from a sippy, just water.

Thanks again.  Seems like just another thing different DRs have different opinions on.

  • We switched 11.5 months because we were out of formula. Peyton did not notice. I am crossing my fingers that our pediatrician will not be furious :).
