first appt ??

I'm super excited for my first appointment next week!!! I will be 5 1/2 weeks. I was looking forward to seeing the baby, or I like to call he/she "the nugget.", but i read on another board that they dont always do a u/s at this appointment. is that true? i'm bummed! I even made DH take off of work for it!

A lot of offices only do 2 u/s, one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks. At this point, it may be very hard to see anything, especially if you're even a little bit off on gestational age. You usually can't see anything that says "baby" until 6 weeks. If you go in now and don't see anything, it can cause undue stress when everything is likely going just fine.

This appointment may be a matter of paperwork and having a chat about your pregnancy as it progresses. I'd tell DH to go ahead and go to work.

You'll see your baby soon enough. Consider this a cost savings, since you won't be paying your co-pay for an unnecessary u/s.

I am 5 weeks today, and we have our first appt (with u/s) on the 23rd.  My DH wouldn't miss it for anything and we are both SO excited to see our little peanut!!  Ask your doctor's office what the appt will be like so that you can prepare yourself and your DH, rather than wondering and just "finding out" when you get there.  Good luck, have fun... we're all in this together!

I went to my first appt at 8 weeks and they did an u/s to confirm the pregnancy. It really depends on the Dr and your insurance. I had my 2nd u/c at 13 weeks b/c they were doing an optional test and then my 3rd was at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. So, it really just depends on the Dr.
