WDYT? Are my names to out there or weird?

So I've posted the name "Nayeli" (NI-yell-ee) before but haven't got much feed back on it. It means " I love you". We would call her "Naya or Eli" for short. The other name is "Elianna". We stumbled upon this name and we both really liked it. We would call her " Ellie or Anna" for short, the name means "god has answered". My husband and I are both hispanic so we wanted something that sounded spanish or italian. As for the middle names Grace is my little sisters name and the other names where just names that my husband and I had on our top names list. So we thought we would try to work them in! Please let me know what you think. Thank you!!!

Nayeli Grace S.

Nayeli Rosalyn S or just "Rose"

Elianna Grace S.

Elianna Aaliyah S.

Re: WDYT? Are my names to out there or weird?

  • Elianna is nice.  Nayeli is awful.  I keep reading it as "navel."  Elianna Aaliyah is way too many vowels.  I vote for Elianna Grace or Elianna Rose.

ETA: I don't think Nayeli sounds Italian or Spanish at all.

  • Nayeli is NMS, but the meaning is nice.

I like Eliana, but why shorten it to Anna? That seems strange to me. Elli I can see as a nickname.

Eliana Grace is definitely my fave. I also love Rosalyn. Rosalyn Grace would be really pretty. :)

  • I've never heard Nayeli before so I looked it up on Behind the Name...I actually think it's really pretty.

I think I prefer Eliana to the spelling Elianna, though (are you pronouncing it Ellie-Ah-nuh? Or Ellie-Ann-uh?)

I really like Nayeli Rose and Elianna Grace.

  • I don't think think Nayeli sounds Spanish or Italian at all.  In fact, I google searched to make sure it wasn't just me, and the resources I found said it was a Native American saying or an Aztec name.  I think it sounds awful no matter what it means, skip it.

Elianna Grace sounds classic, so would Elianna Rosalyn or Elianna Rose.  Elianna Aaliyah is a tongue twister.

Yup that's exactly how we're pronouncing it!

That is because it is not Italian or Spanish. It is a Native American name.

    NAYELI

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: Native American

Means "I love you" in the Zapotec language.

    .

Right.  Then why would she say she wants a name that sounds Spanish or Italian?

  • Elianna is fine. We know a girl named Eliana.

It doesn't have to be spanish or Italian, I just wanted it to sound like it. You know more foreign, not just a regular english name. Sorry for the confusion.

  • elianna isn't too out there.

    the other name is.

  • I vote for Elianna Grace by default. Nayeli is awful. Would you want a name that had "yell" in it? I wouldn't.

Way too many vowels going on in your choices IMO.

I meant just more foreign, not just a plain english name I wanted something a little more exotic. Sorry for the cofusion.

  • Nayeli is pretty awful.

Eliana is cute. Eliana Rosalie would be nice or Eliana Rose or Eliana Grace.

  • I like Elianna.  I think it's cute.  Of the MN you listed, I'd choose Grace over Aaliyah.

Nayeli looks made up.  I'm not a fan of it.

  • Elianna Grace is nice. Not a fan of Nayeli-the "yell" part seems really  harsh-sounding to me.

  • To pp's- not everyone who identifies as "Spanish" is descended only from conquistadors.

To OP- I wasn't famillar with Nayeli, but it's growing on me. Are you pronouncing it Neye-elli? That's how I would pronounce it in Spanish, but as I said, I wasn't familiar with it.

Eliana is also pretty, but feels like it is growing in popularity among Hispanics in the U.S. I could see it being the next Sofia or Isabel, which are both lovely, but I feel like I know way too many Latina babies/toddlers with these names.

ETA: I greatly prefer the spelling Eliana to Elianna. As a Latina Anna with 2 n's, I can tell you that I really, really wish my parents had just spelled with 1 n and not tried to Americanize my name.

  • I love Nayeli, I think it's a beautiful name. The phonetic NI-yell-ee she gave makes it sound pretty strong on the "y" but since it's not an Anglo name, the phonetics are weird to English speakers.

However, you say you and your husband are "Hispanic." That covers many different countries with many different indigenous languages, heritages, and histories. Are you Mexican? If so, picking a name from an indigenous Mexican language makes sense. If you're, say, Puerto Rican, that's kind of weird.

And ditto PP on preferring Eliana to Elianna, and that'll also lend some street cred to the name to your relatives who still actually speak Spanish.

  • I like Elianna Grace with Elle for short. DH has a cousin named Danielle, but has gone by Elle her whole life. I love it!

  • Are you pronouncing it wit the emphasis on the first syllable? NY-ell-ee? When i hear that I think of "nihilist"

If it's ny-ELL-ee it's better, but still not great IMO.

Yay! The way you have it is exactly how my husband and I pronouce it! The way you have it doesn't make it seem so harsh. Thank you!
