WWYD - CD related

I'm having a really hard time sticking with CDing.

At this point, CDing is costing us way more than sposies and we've had lots of mishaps with the washing routine.  Due to the frequency of dirty diapers & the size of my stash/DD's size, we are having to do wash every other day/2 days in the community laundry.  So, $15/week.  Twice, the washer has broken, mid-wash and I've had to fish diapers out of a filled tub and start all over, making it cost an additional $1.65.

I bought some GroBaby diapers, and DD peed up the back, soaking her clothes & I can't figure out what I did wrong.  I just feel like every time I try to go into a week with the intention of exclusively using CDs, something goes awry.

Obviously, most (if not all) of you CD.  Would you stick it out at this point?  I feel like the only reason I am not willing to throw in the towel is b/c of the environmental impact of disposables - but with me staying home w/out pay & DH not making what he was, suddenly, the cost issue is becoming very real. Ugh, I don't know!

  • You have to find the diapers that work well for your baby. AIO's are a leaky, bulky nightmare for us. We love indian pre-folds (about $1.75-$2.00 each-so cheap!) with thirsties adjustable wraps ( about $15 ea). I use about 10 pre-folds and one wrap a day. I do washes every 2-3 days. If you line dry on a rack it's really economical. DS rarely leaks in these. At night we use bumgenius- which kind of suck- but DS is a heavy wetter and a double insert and a thirstie wrap around the bumgenius works for staying dry at night. When you figure out what fits and solve your washer dilemma you'll be glad for CD.

  • We have laundry in our house so I don't notice the cost effect as much as I'm sure you do (it's probably not as large for us either).  PP suggestion to line dry is a great idea.  Do you really think though if you were buying sposies that it would really be cheaper?  If so and you can't afford it, then thats what you need to do.  You have to do what works for you and your family.  That said, I hope you can find a CD system/wash that you love and that works for you...would love for you to be have the CD love too :-)

  • I would sell the GroBaby if those aren't working for you (i.e. recoup part of your cost) and buy something else that will work better - prefolds are cheap and I find that there isn't anything better for the 0-3 month stage when price is considered (we liked our KL0s but they're not worth it for the saving money part).  You could also try a trial to figure out what kind of CDs work for you - not every diaper iwll fit every child well, that's why I say get rid of the GroBaby, they don't fit or don't work for you, so not worth struggling with especially in the early days when you have enough to struggle with.
