Snacks!

Okay, friends...We think Baby Girl has a dairy sensitivity.  I'm also cutting out nuts for now just as a precaution - I'll introduce them again in a week or so.  But in the meantime, I need high protein snacks that don't have dairy or nuts or beans in them.

I think I'm pretty much left with Slim Jims, aren't I?

Re: Snacks!

  • Tofu? Just kidding. I think yogurt is still okay when you are cutting out dairy. I have had to cut dairy before but my doc still allowed yogurt. Do you like edamame? That is one of my go to faves when I am really hungry. HTH!

  • Hmmm - that's a toughie!  Nuts / cheese are my go to snacks for my GD diet (which is ALL about the protein).  What about soy based cheeses?  Sorry - not much help - but I'll keep thinking.

I had been eating Greek Yogurt for breakfast and Cora was GASSY!!  I've taken it out for a few days now and she is doing much better.  It could be a coincidence and it was just her gut maturing.  BUT, Bif gave her a bottle with some formula in it to let me sleep in, and she was a mess for the rest of the day. Fussy and gassy!  That makes me think it was the dairy.  I don't really eat any other kind of dairy, so it had to be the yogurt.  I'm going to wait another week or so (I think Kellymom recommends going for 3wks without it before reintroducing it) and I'll try again.

In the meantime, I'm STARVING and want to snack on something more filling than fruit or bagel chips.

  • What about hard boiled eggs?  I know they aren't the best snack, but they are good source of protein.
  • Go through the drive through and get yourself chicken nuggets :)

Or on a healthier note maybe a small salad?  Carrot and cucumber sticks?

    My sweet boy :)

I feel for you! I have never been so hungry in my life as those first few weeks following giving birth. I would go downstairs in the middle of the night to eat pop tarts after nursing DS. I think I put on about 5 pounds of my baby weight after delivery!

I think the veggies/ranch dip idea is a good one for something healthy but filling. I was going to say cereal as well but that involves milk. What about oatmeal?

  • I know you said no beans, but Hummus / Pita are always good.  I've also been really into cream cheese with pineapple on celery (know that's dairy), but might spur some ideas.  Gheez - I can imagine how hungry you must be!

  • Oh, here is a random thing everyone in my department was eating about a month ago - get some little cherry tomatoes and eat them with pita chips, at the same time. It is actually very tasty :)

  • What about whole wheat bread with sunbutter instead of peanut butter?

  • Goat cheese saved my life when I couldn't have dairy or soy when babynark was small. Get your arse to Earthfare. There are lots of goat cheeses, not just the lumpy musty stuff. I even found a goat cheddar, and a goat brie. She had no tummy troubles with the goat stuff. And they sell goat milk and TJs & Walmart. Some people hate it but I love it. Worth a try. There's goat yogurt too and it's DELICIOUS. Oh, and goat butter. Mmmm

If she seems fine with soy, ditto on the edamame. And if you aren't doing hummus, how about babaganoush with pita? And I pretty much kept a rotisserie chicken in the fridge at all times.

  • You can also try sunflower seeds and sunflower seed butter.  I think it's delicious!  Also, what about deli meats?  You can make a variety of little roll-ups with things like roast beef and horse radish (if you like it), turkey and avocado, etc.  Another simple filling snack is oatmeal.  Maybe try making it with soy milk or some other type of milk, then try stirring in fruit to add more bulk to it.

If you can make a trip to Trader Joe's, Earth Fare or Whole Foods, just walk through the aisles and see what you can find.  They tend to have all sorts of alternative snacks.

  • Random FYI: If you're really trying to cut ALL cow's milk products, most deli meat has milk in it. I had NO idea until I got my big do-not-eat list from the gastro doc. Then again, our case might have been a little more extreme with the whole blood-in-the-stool thing. For us, I could eat like half a cookie and she'd react to the milk/soy in it for a week or more.

That's weird.  And gross.  Why would deli meat have milk in it?  I'm off to google that.

ETA: I read that Applegate farms products are dairy-free, so that might be a good option for anyone avoiding dairy. Their products are quite tasty too, I think.

Also, in my googling, I found this site: https://www.godairyfree.org/

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I honestly think nuts are okay and not an issue, but I'm just taking them out for a bit.

Also, I think it's a dairy sensitivity - not full on allergy.  Thankfully, no blood in the stool!  Good lord!  She just gets really, really gassy and fussy when I eat yogurt.  Small amounts of cheese seem to be okay - but the yogurt, I guess is just too much right now. We'll try it again in a few weeks and see if things have improved any.

I love hummus, but I tried eating it when I BFed Ben and HOLY SMOKES!  We could have fueled a road trip to California with all the gas that boy had. So I'm just avoiding it for now until her system matures a little more.  Even though she was enormous for being 2wks early, she still has a lot of issues associated with early babies.  They aren't major issues - just a lot of minor eating issues.  They are thankfully working themselves out with time.

    Thanks again!

    PS - Milk in lunchmeat??Ick!
