Am I crazy re: spelling of Connor?

We recently found out we are having a boy and told some family and friends the name. In writing, a few of them have written Conner. Am I crazy or is the traditional spelling of the name Connor? We are planning on going with Connor and are big believers in spelling names the way they "should" be spelled, but now that I am looking at both names for so long, they both look wrong to me. Want to get this nipped in the bud before anything personalized shows up on my doorstep with the wrong spelling!

Re: Am I crazy re: spelling of Connor?

  • Connor is probably the oldest/most traditional spelling. But, keep in mind that most people are not going to have a constant mental stream of "correct" spellings. In fact, most people seem to think all the wrong spellings are the right ones!

Connor is just one of those names that is going to seem phonetically correct as Conner and you're therefore going to see it misspelled fairly often.Don't misunderstand though, I'm not advocating spelling it "how it sounds." It should be spelled Connor.

  • I prefer "Connor".

A girl I know named her DS "Konnor".  I absolutely hate when "K" is used to substitute for "C".. it looks terrible IMO.

  • I've never seen it spelled any way other than Connor, but that doesn't mean people don't misspell things all the time. There are a LOT of people out there who spell "their" "thier".

I understand the frustration, though. Our daughter's name has acceptable alternatives (like Catherine and Kathryn) and we picked the most common one -- which is not my favorite -- precisely so she wouldn't have to spell it for everyone. Well, she's gotten several presents with her name on it since she's been born, and some of hte spellings are truly... you-neek!

  • A conner is actually a fish. A Connor is a boy's name or a last name - at least in my line of thinking. Connor is more common (with an alternate possible spelling of Conor - with one 'n'). I would certainly spell it Connor. In fact, I had to re-read your post a few times to see what issue you were talking about (I kept reading C-O-N-N-O-R, even when it was spelled with an -er).

  • Okay, as long as I'm not the crazy one (which I can't be too sure of these days since DH found the TV remote in the fridge the other day). I can accept that some people might misspell the name as long as I'm not putting the wrong one on his birth certificate. I do find it amazing what people will misspell and mispronounce, no matter how simple/common sense it seems.

You can't avoid misspellings. They will happen, no matter how common your name is. I'm Sarah and I've been called Tracey (my maiden name rhymed with this name), Stacey, Sara and Tara.

  • Yes, it's Connor or Conor (nice name - I like it best with two Ns).

But hey, look at how many people think Makayla is the correct spelling of Michaela.

  • I don't know for certain what's correct, but I like Connor better.  The one little boy Connor I know spells it that way too.
  • Our LO's name is Dillyn Connor. Same spelling as yours. I think you should just pick what you like and go with it. People will always mess up spelling. We chose Dillyn which is the Irish spelling over Dylan and we know his will get spelled wrong, but it's no big deal. My name is Stacey and people are forever leaving out the "e" and my DH is Colin with one "l", but a lot of people spell his Collin. I don't think it's that big a deal.

  • I realize I'm really late in posting this and not sure the OP will see it, but my LO is named Connor. To be honest, most people spell it 'Conner', which drives me crazy. However, I knew this would probably happen when we chose the name. We haven't regretted the name for one minute though! :)
