TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

NTTCAL6+R vent: Is it bad that I can't stand

my new co-worker?

Background: my old counterpart got let go back in August, and we were on track to hire a replacement right away. I interviewed quite a few people, and had some favorites. My boss brought in a friend of her's who has NO/ZERO/ZILCH/NADA experience in doing my job (I'm in event marketing, his background is in corporate finance and was a VP at BOA). I expressed my concerns right away that he wasn't a fit.

A few months go by, and we have a hiring freeze (come to find out it's lasting until July 2011 - shoot me now), but we can hire a contractor to help me out. Wouldn't you know it, the person they bring in is my boss's friend.

So, I not only have to train him on processes and procedures of the company, but I also have to train him on the basics of planning/managing/executing events. Awesome. FML.

I have a meeting with my boss tomorrow, and I'm going to be expressing my concerns.

Sorry so long.

Re: NTTCAL6+R vent: Is it bad that I can't stand

  • One of my best friends is in event planning, & it seems SOOO involved...I couldn't imagine having to train someone from scratch!!!  It seems complex enough just LISTENING to her talk about her job!

    Aaaah, nepotism.  :P  So sorry!!!

  • Ugh. So sory you have to deal with that. Incompetent coworks are pretty bad, but it's even worse when you know the only reason they were hired is because they are friends with your boss (which makes discussing the challenges with your boss a very slippery slope indeed).

I don't know if you're looking for advice or anything, so feel free to disregard what I'm about to write: document EVERYTHING...all the steps you take to get joe schmoe up to speed, the time, etc. That way, when you do go to your boss to discuss the progress, it isn't "I'm less productive because of HIM", rather your boss can see what is happening. Slippery slope, and all that.

Oh, and from what I hear (my company hires a lot of ex-BOAers) almost everyone is a VP at BOA. Go into a branch and you'll see 10 employees. I guarentee that half of them are VPs.

  • Nepotism is the worst. It happens in universities all the time. I agree with the pp about how damaging it can be to your productivity. I hope your talk with your boss goes well. GL!!
