I have have been e-mailing my main HR person to get the information on my company's maternity leave policy. Great to find out that I will get paid 2/3 of my salary under STD. When I asked about FMLA and how it applies I found out that it doesn't apply to my office since it is less than 50 employees (we have 25 people on our office)..boo!
The HR guy did tell me that once the STD company tells payroll what my return date is they will make a note of it but that if after that time is up I feel I need to spend more time at home all I have to do is ask my main supervisor for additional time off (since we are not covered on FMLA). He said that other ladies who have been taken maternity leave in the company have done this and no one has ever not been granted additional time off if they requested it. Of course, the one thing I forgot to ask was if it was paid or unpaid time off, but I am going to assume it is unpaid.
Re: Dealing with maternity leave @ work
I looked up my company's policy the other day and the 2/3 pay of salary is what I will get as well. I'm mad that the first week I'm out on leave is considered vacation per the policy so my STD won't start until week 2. I'm highly annoyed that I have to lose 40 hours of vacation time when I'm technically on STD.
That is actually standard for most STD policies. 2/3 and you have to use up any unused vacation prior to that.
That is the same rule for my STD, except it specifcally says 7 "working days". I am glad that we can actually use sick/option time and I plan to roll over 7 days from this calendar year to next year as allowed by the company, so it won't be taken out of next years vacation time.
I am lucky enough to have saved up 7 weeks of sick leave, which I can take paid! After that, STD kicks in and I think I get about 60% pay. I am hoping to take an additional 6 weeks if the boss approves. I feel lucky to be able to take so much time with the little one, but I know it's going to fly by and I'm not going to want to go back to work.
We convinced my mother-in-law to use her 4 weeks of vacation time to come stay with us after I go back to work so we can delay having to send the LO to daycare as long as possible!
Nice STD policies! Our STD doesn't cover maternity leave.
I have saved up about 3 1/2 months worth of leave, otherwise my maternity leave would have been completely unpaid.
I have a feeling I'll be going out early due to possible bedrest with the twins, so I'll probably run out of leave but I'm sure my company will keep me on regardless.
Wow, I didn't know my company was so awesome! We get up to 12 weeks at full pay under Short Term Disability. We're also covered under FMLA (only for 8 weeks I beleive) so I'm guaranteed a job if not my own job once I come back. Luckily I've been the manager here for 4 years - I doubt they want to bring someone in to replace me... considering there's only my office in my state for our company...!
I just have to use any unused sick/vacation time before the STD kicks in - but I plan to use every one of those hours leading up to leaving!!
Neither does ours. We use up any vacation time and sick leave and then it's unpaid. And it is mandatory to burn up all the other leave before you can do the unpaid part.
