Recommend your baby carrier

I have a Baby Bjorn that I got as a gift for DS #1.  To be honest, I think used it once or twice but wasn't thrilled with it.  I have been reading that a lot of you recommend putting the little one in a carrier and the bigger one in a shopping cart (or stroller, etc.) for outings.  I have also read now that the Bjorn isn't suppost to be good for the spine, hips, etc.

What carriers do you recommend?  Is it worth buing an Ergo or a different carrier?  Do you use it enough to justify the cost?

TIA!

Re: Recommend your baby carrier

  • love my ergo! I had it with DS, bought it when he was 7 months old. It was a guaranteed nap on the go for him. With DD I bought the heart to heart insert. I tried it at 4 wks and did like it. At that point I used a ring sling in the belly to belly kangaroo position. Around 2 months I was able to use the ergo with the infant insert with no issues. (her legs were splayed open more that point so it was more comfortable). I love it now. She sleeps immediately in it. She loves looking up at me, its a great comfortable carrier for me and baby.

I have tried the bjorn and liked it for a short window of time with DS when he loved to face out. That was all I liked it for.

  • I use a moby wrap.  I find I use my double stroller more than anything but if I need to run to the store real quick I put my DD in the moby and DS in the cart.  It's really comfortable for me and I have some big babies;)  My DD is almost 6 months old and already 19-20 lbs.  I've been using it since she was born.

My friend has the Ergo and she still uses it, her LO is 1.5 yrs old.  You wouldn't be able to do that with the moby, but if you plan to just use a carrier when LO is an infant it would be perfect and it's pretty cheap:)

  • I have a Moby and an Ergo.  I like the Moby better for the first few months; then the Ergo after about five months or so.

  • I also love the Ergo. I have the bjorn too, but it's not nearly as comfortable as the Ergo. I didn't use it as much for DS but DD absolutely loves it.

  • I used the moby for the first few months, then switched to the ergo once DS had better head control.  I use the ergo pretty frequently and like it a lot.

  • I love my Ergo. I had a hand-me-down Bjorn and it worked well until DS got heavy, 15 lbs. Then it started to make my back hurt. We went for the Ergo and love it. We've used it for everything from hiking, to outings where a stroller wouldn't have worked, to the store, doing chores inside and outside the house, etc. It doesn't kill my back and DS is about 25 lbs (says it's good until 40 lbs). It does take a little bit of practice to put it on just right and to get the kid into the back wearing position on your own. I know a gal who doesn't use her stroller anymore, just the Ergo to carry the kid around.

I have heard people recommend the Beco but the one thing I heard against it was that it wasn't really intended for taller folks (DH is 6'5 and I'm 5'10). Also the Ergo felt more comfortable to me in the store than the Beco. If you can you should try them out before buying.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again if something happened to mine. I've seen them on Craigslist too, you can score a used one there at a steal. Just check the material well for signs of damage before you purchase.
