I would start with doing some research and getting comfortable with different types and brands, and getting a few of different types to see what works for you and your LO. The FAQ has some links that may help.
I too would do a trial to get an idea of the styles and brands that you like. I am partial to Jilliansdrawers because they give a cash back refund on what you don't keep (less the $10 trial fee) unlike some competitiors that give a refund only as store credit. This is not a problem if the place has stuff you like, but if not you have to find a way to spend your money there. IMO
I started with 6 BG pockets to see how I liked it. I wasn't just interested in how the diapers worked for LO but how they worked for our lifestyle. I have since bought more and now CD full time.
It is hard for anyone to tell you what is best for you and your baby. If you are currently in sposies, I recommend starting with diapers that are a lot like them, so it is not such a shock to your system.

Re: If I were to begin CDing........
I too think that a trail pack is a good way to go.
I started out buying a dozen prefolds and half a dozen BumGenius One-Size and got lucky that I loved it all.
Not everyone likes BGs though. I have since moved away from prefolds and on to BG AIOS (rather than the pocket diapers) and fitteds.
