NON-convertible cribs

Sorry I'm on a bit of a posting binge today...

I've done some research and hubby and I have talked, and we really don't think we want a convertible crib for our little boy, and I'm looking for some opinions + any help I can get in finding good NON-convertible ones for sale, preferably with reviews. I'm getting frustrated because those listed/reviewed on Consumer Reports, BRU, and Amazon seem to almost exclusively be convertible.

We definitely want to try to have more kids in a couple years, so we'd like to have #2 use the same crib.  We can easily find #1 a toddler bed when he needs it, or buy him a twin, or use the good quality twin guest bed we already have.  The convertibles typically convert to full beds rather than twins, which we think might be too big for our spaces.  And also, I've read that babies tend to chew the edges, which doesn't bode well for using the same head/footboards throughout their young adulthood.  And lastly, I'm hoping to save a little money by avoiding the "extra" that come with convertibles.

So my questions are:

1.) Is my thinking above logical, or am I missing some reason we SHOULD go with a convertible?

2.) Where the heck do I find a decent selection and reviews on NON-convertibles?

Thanks so much if anyone can help!

Re: NON-convertible cribs

  • we got a convertible for ds expecting to let him use it throughout his life in our home, but i just felt that the full size bed was too big a jump from the toddler bed, so we'll just keep the crib as a crib for the new baby.

i don't think there is a reason to go with the convertible, but if you are worried about the chewing, the only piece that stays is the headboard, which is rarely chewed on since it is up against the wall...the other pieces, shredded. lol.

i know i ordered a non convertible for our beach house this summer from pb kids. i don't know where else to look.

  • It really depends on the baby if they will chew or not.  My daughter did not, but if you are worried you can find protective covers for the cribs so if they chew it is a softer plastic shield.
  • So I think your logic is good. Um there are benefits with both kinds of cribs. For my DD I got a convertable, she hates it as a toddler bed though, so she has a twin bed. So seeing as I had soem problems with the convertable being Im short and couldnt reach the bottom without bruises, this time we got a drop side (non convertable) I can reach at any point any where in the crib. And I can use it for if I do decide to have more in the future.

I got mine though on Craigslist, and I guess it all depends on how closely you watch CL, and we really took the make and yr and researched reviews before we bought to know what kind of crib we were getting. But I love this crib.... So I guess just keep your options open?

  • DH and I were *just* having this conversation last night. Thinking that the crib (convertible) that we like right now might be too "grown up" looking when LO is a 5 year old who really just wants a racecar bed, you know? Easy enough to get a twin bed later - and probably less expensive. Convertible seems to be the way they make them now- but for space and style reasons, this may not be the way we go... as long as it drops down to be a toddler bed, then he can use that for the first few years I'd think - and then move to a twin later.

I don't have recs b/c I just started thinking about this- but will be interested to see what other ppl say.

  • Did you try target or big lots? I know they sell cribs without any conversion . . . although that does mean you'll need to buy a toddler bed down the road . . .
  • You don't actually have to convert the crib to a toddler bed. You can just leave it as a crib. This is our plan.  We'll find the crib we like and is the right price range, regardless of conversion or not, and just leave it as a crib.   Plus, the sales people at Buy Buy Baby (and others) have told us that all cribs are convertible in some fashion.  Don't know if I believe them, but I'm not going to spend a lot of time searching specifically for a non-convertible crib, when I can just opt to leave it as a crib for as long as we need it.

  • Thanks for some of the feedback everyone... DietCoke you make a good point, that we don't *have to* convert it, but I guess I feel like I'm paying more for all the convertibility, and plus, I guess I just don't like the look of most of them (where the back wall looks like a headboard).  We just like a more modern look, I guess.

I did just find one crib style earlier that doesn't look convertible (even though you can make it a toddler bed, just not a full) and it's inexpensive and seems to have good reviews, so I may have to look into getting this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4134478&fromRegistryNumber=46149347&product_skn=491366 (sorry if it doesn't come out clicky).

  • We didn't get a convertible crib b/c I thought that the additional furniture designed to match was WAY over priced for the quality.  SO... we went out and bought a "grown up" bedroom set of great quality and a non convertible crib to match it.  We bought the Peyton Classic Crib by Bonavita.  The Peyton was Consumer Reports top ranked crib so we felt good about it.  Hasn't arrived yet, so can't tell you about it in person, but here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-Peyton-Classic-Crib/dp/B003OSAT06

  • We got a convertible crib just because it was the crib we liked. My step dad said that he had one for my step sister when she was born and never converted it. The one we got actually converts to a toddlers bed, then a day bed and then a full size. So if we did decide to convert it, it would work for a lot. Here is the link to the one we got.

  • We found a convertable crib that Simmons Kids makes and it had a square back and not a rounded or arched back so it looks less grown up. We plan to use the crib for all the kids we have and at some point when we are done, use it as an actual bed. I didn't want a crib that looked like a headboard but had a hard time finding a good quality crib that wasn't convertable. Good luck and happy hunting!
