Quick I need knitting help!

I'm making a pair of mittens and this particular does increases for a few rows for the thumb and then you place those increased stitches onto a stitch holder for later. Well the following line says "Cast on 2 stitches for back of thumb" and then says nothing else about those two stitches. The following directions just say to knit even rounds and then the directions for decreasing and closing up the top. After that it says "Pick up the stitches on holder and 2 cast on stitches for back of thumb. Divide onto 3 needles and knit even rounds for . . . "

So where have these two cast on stitches been hanging out? It doesn't sound like I was supposed to be knitting those with the even rounds for the hand but it doesn't sound like they were supposed to go on the stitch holder either.

Any clues??!!

  • You will knit those alongwith the even rounds for the finger portion. It'll help give it shape. I've not knit actual mittens but I've done bath mitts and that's how they're done.

  • So when I go to do the thumb do I just pick up those two already knit stitches at the point where they were cast on?

  • I believe so. You're knitting in the round, right? The ones I've done were knit flat and seamed so it might be different. Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.
  • Thanks!

Yes - the cast on stitches will help prevent ugly laddering that you (can) get when you pick up stitches.  I've done it before in the armpits of raglan sleeved sweaters and I think I'm going to cast on stitches in armpits of all the sweaters I knit from here on out.

  • Also, wouldn't it leave a hole if you were to pick them up from where they ended (not where you cast on the first stitch) since they aren't connected to a row beneath them?  If that makes any sense?
