Metformin screwing up AF instead of helping?

I am borderline type 2 diabetic/possible PCOS. I started Metformin on October 19, about a week before I should have gotten my second post m/c AF. I'm at CD39 with 2 BFNs and no period. I know that Metformin is often successfully used to regulate periods and ovulation in women with PCOS, is it possible for the Met to mess up AF in an attempt to regulate it? Has anyone else experienced/heard of Metformin causing you to skip a period or mess up your period?

Re: Metformin screwing up AF instead of helping?

  • I have PCOS and was put on Metformin to regulate my cycle...nadda.  It never worked, although the RE nurse told me that it may mess with my cycle.  Then I told her I didn't ever really have regular cycles!  (she needed to read the chart)   But at least I remember that part! Maybe that happened to me so one day I could pass the info on to you! LOL

You may have to call your Dr. and ask to get on Provera (or the like) since it has been so long!!!

  • Metformin won't keep AF from arriving.  It isn't a miracle fertility drug, just a drug to help your hormone system more effectively use insulin.  Cycles post m/c can be weird and if you do have PCOS, that makes cycles weirder.  Are you charting or using OPKs at all?  Without either one of those to give an indication that you have in fact O'd and when, there is no way to tell when AF will show.
