Adoption

How/when did you tell your employer?

At what point in the process did you tell your employer your adoption plans? This is the part I dread the most out of it all. My place of work is not the most professional :( I also would like to keep it private but worry once I tell my supervisor it will be "out of the bag". I have to tell my supervisor of course because I'll be taking FMLA and also there is an employment form that she will have to fill out. The form is very basic though so that's good. My plan is to give her the employment verification form and my FMLA paper at the same time. I'm just not looking forward to the nosey questions and comments I'm sure I'll get (trust me, I will).

Re: How/when did you tell your employer?

  • I told my boss pretty early in the process because I needed him to fill out an employment verification form as well as write me a letter of recommendation.  He adopted two children himself, so he totally understood when I asked him to keep things quiet for now.  I am not sure what to tell you, though.  I would hope that your employer would keep things quiet if you asked her to.
  • DH told his boss during the homestudy, because we used his boss as a reference.

I waited until our profile went active. I wanted to wait as long as possible so I didn't get a lot of questions, even though my workplace was fantastic and I didn't foresee any problems. I was also following the advice of a CW who adopted a few years prior.

I didn't talk to HR until we had a placement.

  • I told just my boss before we went active because we needed him to complete the employment verification form.  I didn't tell anyone else, and asked him not to even tell the other partners at the firm, which he obliged.

  • I report to two directors and 1 vice president. One of my directors has known since I started working for her that we were interested in adoption. She's great about things like this and had been helpful for networking purposes. I emailed my other boss and my VP about a month ago once we started filling out the home study paper work. Since we are using a consultant and can be matched pretty quickly after our home study is completed, I thought it was best to tell them (I also wanted to tell them since I will be taking at least 8 weeks off once the baby is born).

I told my HR director a couple of weeks ago because I needed her to fill out the employment verification form. Eveyrone has been so supported and most people at my work place know! I've even had people come up to me telling me they are adopted and think it's such a wonderful thing.

  • I was having to leave for class at exactly 5pm for the past 8 weeks and around week 4/5 there were some big projects going on...who ironically had Wednesday morning meetings to prep for. I have always made myself available without having to leave at a specific time. I felt like they thought something was up when I was consistently leaving on Tuesday each week, especially since we had such a big morning coming up.

So afterward, I said that I just wanted him to know I wasn't trying to bail but that we were in a 10 week class to foster. He seemed to be 100% understanding. Thankfully this made it easy to bring up too.

I've told a few of the younger ladies that I work with too about what we're doing so, who know's who all knows. No one else has said anything.

  • Thats a good question.
