Junie B Jones drives me nuts!

Alissa loves these books, but they have horrible grammar! I get that they appeal to the younger audience, but wouldn't you think that a book that caters to kids learning to read would use proper grammar and spelling?

Re: Junie B Jones drives me nuts!

  • I'm with you! I am constantly correcting DD's English (I'm a proofreader, I can't help it) and was horrified by the language in the Junie B. books. People keep saying, "But that's how Kindergartners and 1st graders talk." Well, maybe, but we shouldn't be reinforcing that!

My mom sent DD a Halloween Junie B. book and I told her I'd prefer she not send any more Junie B. books to DD... when I read them to her, I translate/interpret. None of this, "I done did that!" junk!!

  • I love Junie B!  But maybe you'd like the Cam Jenson books better.  :)

I think the stories are cute, I just don't like the way Junie talks. Plus, it's full of sass! :)

Thanks for the rec, I will check those out!

  • I agree on Junie B. Jones.  I haven't read them to my DD but just looking at them in the bookstore turned me off.  I'd recommend the A to Z Mysteries.  Very cute and my DD loves them.  Oh, and we just read a Geronimo Stilton book from cover to cover in one sitting (112 pages!) this afternoon and she just asked me to read it again.  We also like Cam Janson.  Oh, and there was a cute book series...the Cobble Street Cousins?  that we read a while back that was also a hit.  But ITA about JBJ.

  • I didn't love the sassy language or attitude either...

Another good rec is the "Magic Tree House" books, same type of chapter book but better grammar and story!

  • I've been avoiding Junie B. for the same reasons!  So we haven't read one yet but we did just receive a "Ivy & Bean" book, which is somewhat the same I'm sure.  The grammar isn't horrible but the sass and teasing of Bean and her sister makes me cringe!  DD is loving the story but I probably won't buy another.

  • I agree.  I checked one out for DS, but we won't get another.

He loves the Magic Tree House books, Cam Jansen, The Calendar Mysteries and the A to Z Mysteries.

  • I picked up some of them at a yard sale, thinking that they would be good for later.

I read one page and threw them back into the donation bin. They are appalling, and as a former English teacher, I will not have them in my house.

There are thousands of books that appeal to the younger audience without sounding like that.

    They are so awful. Yuck.

  • Just a former teacher's opinion, but we used them in my 1st & 2nd grade classrooms.  One popular activity was for the kids to translate Junie B language into proper English.  The kids really enjoyed it.

  • they're books that are meant to poke fun at junie's outrageousness.  K-2s love the fact that they have an edge on junie's bad grammar and goofy behavior, that's the fun of a junie b. jones book.  i love reading and laughing at her wrong antics, sayings, and beliefs as do matt and sean.  are they models of how we should act and speak the right way? nahhh. even junie b. is uncomfortable with her own behavior. i see them as early elementary satire.

of course this is all coming from someone who occasionally laughs out loud when reading them.
