I am trying so hard to not have to go on insulin and I've been working out for 15 minutes after every meal and following my meal plan exactly and my numbers have been great. Up until last night. We didn't have any food in the house because Monday is usually my grocery shopping day, so we went to McDonald's and according to their website, the Filet O Fish is 38 grams of carbs, so I ordered that and ate it and exercised for 15 minutes as usual, and instead of my blood sugar being 108 like it normally has been after dinner, it was 171!!! How is this possible! Has anyone else ever noticed this happening after they went out to eat? Is it possible that McDonald's doesn't have accurate information on their site?
Re: Anyone have high blood sugar after eating out?
My DH and I eat out a lot and it's taken us a while to figure out what the safe foods are at our fav places. I've noticed that not eating enough does funky things to my levels, so I couldn't eat just a sandwich - I would have added a salad at least. I usually try to avoid white carbs at all, as they always make my sugars go high, so I order wheat buns for sandwiches, whole wheat pasta, sweet potato fries instead of regular fries, etc.
Unfortunately, as your pregnancy progresses, the GD gets harder to control. Mine was controlled through diet the first month, then I had to add insulin as my numbers were out of control. A week ago, I had to add yet another type of insulin to my treatment plan. If you have to add insulin, it certainly isn't the end of the world. Adding insulin allowed me to eat more normally again and I've seriously been a lot less stressed out about numbers since I've added insulin to my treatment plan.
Good luck!
Unfortunately as you're still fairly early on, you'll probably find your numbers harder and harder to control. As my endocrinologist informed me, people get more and more resistant by the start of 3rd tri and become even more so about 34 weeks. It's also been my experience.
I've had McD's a few times and don't seem to have a problem with it. I usually order a child-size cheeseburger or even a quarter pounder with cheese, a milk and apple slices. My blood sugar seems to be fine with those. I don't order there often, just when I'm away from home and it's really time for a meal. I find I've gone back there a few times more than I normally would in that situation because I already know that it works for me blood sugar-wise as opposed to other places.
If you end up on insulin, I promise it's not bad at all. I'm on two shots per day just for my fasting numbers and the injections don't hurt at all as I rarely feel the needle going in.
Good luck!
I think the nutritional information on the websites is idealized- unfortunately the portion control at the actual establishment may be off. On a sandwich I would think it would come from condiments for the most part.
The only thing I tend to get when we eat out (fast food or nicer place) is a salad. Even then I have to watch those to be sure there are not a lot of hidden carbs and I am sure portion control on those is even more off from nutritional info in menus than other items.
I've had a few salads out but it's not nearly enough carbs for me. I need 60g for lunch and 75g for dinner and I won't get that for a salad. I have had the McD's salad with a child-size cheeseburger and put very little dressing on it and my blood sugar was actually low. The next time I added a milk and it was higher and definitely within range at one hour.
I have also personally found that some yam or sweet potato fries don't spike my bs like potatoes or french fries do.
