Two Under 2

Too soon to fly with newborn???

Question for you ladies:

I know that I might be crazy to want to fly with a 2 year old and a newborn, but I'm thinking I may be even more crazy with the timing. Baby #2 will be almost six weeks. We are due May 25 and had a family trip planned for Florida the week on July 4th. Is that too soon to fly???? I will be asking my ob when I go in next week and the peditrician cause I happen to have an appointment for that next week too, but just wanted your opinions. We haven't been on a family vacation yet, but if it not safe I definitely will nix the idea.

  • I will probably be flying when DD2 is either 5 weeks or 7 weeks (because we live overseas and I had to come back to the States to have her).  I don't think it's unsafe, and it's probably easier to fly with a newborn than an older baby (we flew with DD1 at 3 months, 8 months and 11 months, and the first flight was definitely the easiest!).

  • As long as everyone is healthy, I would do it. We have traveled a lot with DS, and I'm hoping that we can still travel with #2 as well. I can see you might be anxious if you haven't traveled a lot with your first...just remember to be flexible and creative, and hopefully you can enjoy vacations while still being sleep-deprived!

  • I wouldn't plan on it.  If you go overdue the new baby could be as young as 4 weeks - there is no way I would have wanted to take a vacation with a 4 week old and a 20 month old, and I had a really fast recovery!  What if you have a rough delivery or recovery?  I'd probably push the vacation back at least a month.

  • I would push it back. Vacationing with kids is NOT a vacation. I have been exhausted after every trip with my kids, and one was not a newborn. Just the amount of planning, travel, coordination, living out of suitcases, eating out at restaurants, making meals in a hotel room, etc... it is not the vacations we are used to pre-babies. I cannot imagine flying to Florida for a vacation with a 6 week old. Physically or mentally. I'd save your money and do it at a later date.
  • Our DD are both adopted, DD2 from out of state.  We flew home with her when she was 8 days old, with her 20 month old sister in tow, and all was fine.

The flights will be just fine... the vacation itself is another question!  Depending on what you're doing, you may want more rest and schedule than a 4-6 week old will allow...  If you're just hanging out at the beach you may be ok, but I can't imagine trying to do something like Disney with one that little...
