Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old with fever

Yesterday DS started with a fever. We woke up in the middle of the night with a pretty high fever. At what point should I be worried and calling the doctor? First time mom, and not sure what is an acceptable fever.

We have gave tylenol and gave him a long bath so his temperature would come down with the water.

We have an appt this morning at 9:45 for 4 month shots...

Blessed with 2 amazing little boys. One grew in my tummy and the other my heart.

06/30/10 my 1st son was born on my birthday.

Re: 4 month old with fever

  • Since you have an appointment this morning, obviously bring it up then.

An oral temp of 99.5 or rectal temp of 100.4 is considered a fever in babies. So I would have called if it were over that for more than a couple of hours.

  • He had a 103.2 this morning. That seemed pretty high. So I got in him in the tub, and gave Tylenol and it came down (99), he is back asleep for now. Will be waking him shortly to check it again.

Yeah, that's really high. But since you said you have an appointment this morning anyway, definitely bring it up so the doctor can see if there's something else wrong with him.

  • I hope he's doing better soon!  DD had a fever this weekend too. Doses of tylenol kept it down and it only lasted about 24 hours.  But she's still congested :(

  • Hope he feels better, he probably won't be able to get the shots today, but bring him in anyway, I'm sure he's fine, sounds like you're doing everything right...
  • Poor little guy. :(  I would def. put off the shots until he's feeling better but might keep the appointment just to have him checked out.  Sounds like a normal bug.
  • Call the pedi because sometimes they do well visits (shots) all at the same time of day to avoid sick kids coming in contact with the well kids.  They won't give shots if LO has a temp.
  • With his fever as high as it was, this morning was like a mad rush once we arrived at the peds office. We won't know much until tomorrow. Xrays should either bronchitis or pneumonia. Now were just waiting on blood tests and urinalysis results.

His fever has been up and down all day today. Hoping the antibiotic shots get him feeling better and soon.
