Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solids question

At LO's 4mo appt, pedi said we could start solids if we wanted to.  We started with rice cereal and that was fine, we moved to sweet potatoes and he *seemed* fine, then peas, also *seemed* fine but he didn't go poop for a couple days, since he's BF it's not unusual, but I decided to give him some  rice cereal mixed with a little bit of apples and BM to see if that would help him go.  He threw all that up.  I looked in "what to expect the first year" and found that a lot of the others things that were going on with him since we started veggies were not good signs.  He was fussy, waking up frequently at night (he had been sleeping 8-10 hours), really gassy.  The book said to wait a week and start over.

It's been a week, so I thought I would try again.  I mixed a little peas with cereal and BM.  He only ate about 5ish bites and within 2 hours after he at he was throwing up.  He threw up off an on for about 2 hours, the majority of it the first couple times he threw up but then he woke up a couple more times and a little more came out.

I will call the pedi tomorrow, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same experience when starting solids.  If you did, did you just wait longer to try again?

Re: Solids question

  • I would definitely wait longer-- like at least another month.

  • Instead of going straight to peas, you might want to try the "orange" foods and soft fruit. Sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, apples, banana and pears are what my pedi told us to try first. They're easier to digest than green foods since there tends to be less fiber. I do agree with PP though, you should probably wait a couple more weeks before trying to feed LO solids again.

  • We def didn't have the throwing up issue, but he was gassy and uncomfortable so we waited a week and tried another food and he still didn't tolerate it well. We waited until he was 5mo and he's been doing fine since.

He is also BF so I had the same pooping issue, but since there was more then just BM going in I personally had an issue with all that food and no poop for 5 days so I gave him juice and it worked. But let me tell ya... prunes are like roto-rooter for babies!! We def can't give him more than an ounce at a time because he literally pooped 5 times in 2 days... def cleaned him out.

Is it spit-up or projectile vomit?

  • It wasn't projectile, but it was a lot more than just spit up.  It was all over, i had to change my shirt and pants 3 times.  Every time I changed he would throw up more.
  • I'd wait,,, & now hearing that I'm going to wait... there's no need to go to solids yet, and what us happening is that his pyloric sphincter is still developing & that is the part of the stomach that connects to the beginning of the small intestines. BM & liquids move through easily, but it's clear that his stomach can hold the amount you're giving him, but the p.s. cannot yet "process" the thickness out of the stomach, so it sits, and at this age if stomach (abdominals) muscle development, the reaction to throw up is really his bodies only option. I'll wait til my guy is 5, 5 1/2 months now though cause of your story. I'm eager to feed him but I know he's fine on the BM for now,,, thanks for sharing!

  • Try oat cereal if you seem to think he's constipated, DS does much better on it. He is going to be 5 months Wednesday so I don't think its too early to start, just may need to tweak the food choices.

Peas can be a bit acidic since they are higher protein; try peas, apples, sweet potatoes or avocado. We mix about 1 teaspoon of the fruit or veg into 1 tablespoon of cereal...no pukage yet...GL!
