Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Q from 3-6 about solids

Right now we sorta have a routine down of:

9am - 6oz

10:30am - Oatmeal

12pm - 3oz

3pm - 5oz

6pm - 6oz

8pm- 6oz and bed

1) Should I start adding another round of oatmeal in the afternoon or evening?

2) when and how do you start introducing veggies and fruits?

3) when do you start eliminating the bottle?

TIA

Re: Q from 3-6 about solids

  • 1) Should I start adding another round of oatmeal in the afternoon or evening? Anytime as long as BM or formula is their primary food2) when and how do you start introducing veggies and fruits? I would say 6 months. One at a time, wait 3 days, try something new. 3) when do you start eliminating the bottle? Not until at least a year

  • 1.  I would start adding a second round of oatmeal in the evening if you feel comfortable doing so.

    2.  You can start fruits/veggies whenever you feel comfortable doing so but I would definitely start by 6 months.  You can always consult your pediatrician.

    3.  Formula/BM should be baby's main source of nutrition until the 1 year mark so don't worry about eliminating the bottle right now.  Let baby take the lead with this one.  Liam weaned himself down to 4 (8 oz) bottles a day a month ago and I think that's where we are going to stay.  Your baby will let you know when she's ready to drop a feeding.

  • I'd add some evening fruits if anything. Early fruits are avocado, banana, apple. If the cereal is constipating LO, try pear or prunes. Also, this site is the baby food bible: www.wholesomebabyfood.com. Granted, it's geared towards making your own, but it still has all the ages & stages. Don't rush to wean the bottle. LO will start taking less and less as s/he learns that solids can make hunger go away. Don't eliminate the bottle until at least 12mo. It's their primary source of nutrition until then.

  • I started giving LO fruits around 5 months. She didn't like the oatmeal or rice cereal very much, so I added mashed up banana to it and she LOVED it. We didn't give her much else until 6 months though.

When we started giving her more solid foods the ped told us to stick to two small baby food jars a day (or one "meal" of oatmeal and one small jar of baby food). We started with the orange foods but the ped said it didn't really matter. Just introduce one food at a time and give them 2-3 days to see if they have a reaction to it.

We feed E solids at "lunch" and "dinner"

I haven't purposefully cut back on breastfeeding. She probably nurses one less time during the day now that she's on solids, but milk is her primary source of nutrition for now. I'll probably keep it that way until she's a year old because I don't want to wean her to formula (and she can't have cows milk until 12 months).

I think I answered all your questions. :)

  • Pretty much the same answers as PP.  Add another solids feeding if you like, but don't cut back on bottles.  You can start w fruits/veggies, our pedi said to do yellow veggies/white fruits first, & thin w milk, BM, or formula if the consistency is too thick.

We didn't start solids until just about 6 mo, so we added a second feeding of veggies at night pretty quickly.  Still at 2 meals, no decrease in no of nursing sessions.

  • 1) Should I start adding another round of oatmeal in the afternoon or evening? I would. As long as LO is interested. Every baby is different.

    2) when and how do you start introducing veggies and fruits? We started veggies at 5 months (a new one every 3 days to check for allergies) and fruits at 5 1/2 months (same thing, a new one every 3 days)

    3) when do you start eliminating the bottle? DS still has 6 bottles/day. I'm thinking he may go down to 5 soon because he can drink 6oz at a time now. We'll just see when he naturally starts going longer between bottles to eliminate one.
