3rd Trimester

Falling While Pregnant

I am 32 weeks and yesterday I tripped and fell on my stomach onto carpet. I haven't really felt the baby kick as strong as usual, and am sore to the touch where I hit. I am just worried if it could have hurt the baby. Do I need to go in and get checked?  Has anyone else had this happen?

  • It's better to be safe than sorry. Go get checked out.

  • If you are feeling like the baby isn't as active as usual, its worth checking out.  Its amazing how much cushion they have, but you never know, and the worry won't help you much either.  What a crappy fall to have when you are so far along, that must have hurt!
  • I fell when I was pregnant with DD..

down some wooden stairs onto a concrete floor..

i hurt myself so bad, but she was just fine in there!

doc told me that if i didn't feel her normal amount of kicks then to come in and get checked out.. turns out she was just scared and resumed back to normal the next day.

if the kicks just aren't as strong, it doesn't seem like it's something to be worried about, just as long as there's still kicks, i wouldn't worry too much. if you need a piece of mind though, go get checked.. theres no harm.

  • I would call your doctor just to be sure.  I fell several weeks ago (but not directly on my stomach) and was told by several doctor friends that the greatest risk is for your placenta to detach, not that you will injure your baby.   They said you would know there is a problem if you experience bleeding or cramping, but that otherwise things are probably fine.  But again, if you are concerned you should call your doc!

  • I would most definitely get checked.  I fell at 38 weeks outside my house on my side and went to get checked, baby was moving though.  My midwife said a major concern with a fall is the placenta.

  • I fell 2-3 weeks ago on a bus on the way to a NST, I didn't bump my stomach but fell on my hands and knees.  They sent me up to Labor and Delivery for a few hours after my NST for more monitering to make sure everything was ok.
  • No fun!  I'd call tomorrow if you feel like the kicks haven't resumed as normal.

I just took a digger on the street today, but landed more on my knee and butt.  I can't normally do the splits, so doing it while pregnant makes it so much more painful.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • Yes, call! I fell at 28 weeks (the day before a scheduled NST) and even though I did not land on my tummy, when I came in the next day they scolded me for not calling. They left me on the NST monitor for extra time. They then gave me a list of other things to look for and to call if anything happened. So far 11 weeks later everything seems fine.
