What are the rules....

On drinking and bf'ing.  Like can I have one and still nurse?  Or do I have to pump and dump?  Cause when I pump, nothing comes out.  And I need a bad habit.  So I wanna drink....

HELP!

Re: What are the rules....

  • Depends on what you're drinking.  My OB told me that it was one glass of wine.  Any more and dump.  But always dump for Hard stuff.

This is what I go by too - 1 glass of wine or 1 beer, dump if I have had a real drink. I pump and dump if I am even slightly feeling it - on the rare occasions Stick out tongue .

Edit - 1 glass of beer / wine and I will nurse / pump - just so it makes sense.

  • This is bad news ladies.  Kinda hard to have it be a bad habit if it's only one drink and no hard liqeur.  kwim?  bummer....
  • I haven't had more than 2 beers, but I just wait a few hours after.  I thought that pump and dump was not really done anymore, unless you had a ton (of drinks) and needed to (pump) to keep up your supply.

  • Have a drink, it's fine. Hardly any gets in your breast milk. I follow the rule, if you're ok to drive, you're ok to drink. Don't pump and dump either, because it's pointless. The alcohol will be out of your entire system, including breast milk in two hours.

  • Wait, so if I just don't nurse for a few hours, the alcohol gets filtered out of my breast milk?  Like if I had a 1/2 drink, then nursed and immediatly had 2 drinks but then waited 3-4 hrs to nurse again, it'd be fine?  Did that make sense?  Geez..you guys can see why I need a drink...
  • Pump and Dump is no longer thought to be necessary.  If you could pass a drunk test, you are ok to nurse.  Very little gets into your breast milk and should not affect the baby.

I don't know about nursing right away, but 3-4 hours after 2 drinks should be absolutely fine.  It's metabolized out of your milk the same as your blood.  If you don't feel the effects from it, you're fine to nurse/pump.

SWEET & thank you more than you know.  I used to be a bit of a party girl and Halloween weekend was always such a blast.  I'm a little bummed tonight to be sitting home with a teething fussy baby and a tired husband.  So, I think I"m gonna have a drink or two and try to seduce him...

  • Have fun, mia!  Wink

wow, that is the worst advice!

LC said if you can drive you can nurse.  If you cannot nurse then wait, alcohol leaves your breastmilk the same way it leaves your blood.

Only 2% of alcohol even makes it into your breastmilk.  It also takes 90 minutes for the alcohol to peak so you can even nurse right after or pump and freeze it right after,
