1st Trimester

Exposure to Shingles

Just found out that my dad has a nasty case of Shingles. I haven't been around him since the rash appeared, but he did stay over at my apartment last weekend.

He's at the hospital right now, and the doctors said I definitely shouldn't be anywhere near him now, but I was just wondering if anyone knows about the dangers of being exposed to it before the rash.  I haven't been able to find much on this by googling it, and I will of course call my OB on Monday, but just wondered if anyone could give me any reassurance.

I'm in my first trimester, and I did have chickenpox as a kid.

TIA!

Re: Exposure to Shingles

  • You cannot catch shingles from another person. Shingles is not contagious, it is a reactivation of the virus that causes chicken pox (cause of reactivation is usually unknown, it is thought to have something to do with stress or a compromised immune system).  However, someone with shingles can transfer the virus to someone who has never had the chicken pox.  So if you've had the chicken pox, I don't think you have anything to worry about! Hope your dad is ok.  Shingles can be really nasty.

  • Thanks for the advice. The thing that's weird though, is that my aunt had it about 2 months ago, so everyone in my family suspects there must be some link...

  • It's only a problem if you aren't immune to chicken pox. Your doctor should have checked for this with your prenatal labs.
  • I had shingles when I was pregnant last time.  It sucked, but it was no risk to the baby/pregnancy.

Kline551 is right, I've researched this extensively since I did not have cp as a child.  I was also exposed to shingles so I had a blood test and turns out I have a natural immunity to cp, but it sure was scary.  You shouldn't have to worry though since you've already had it.
