Exposure to Shingles

Just found out that my dad has a nasty case of Shingles. I haven't been around him since the rash appeared, but he did stay over at my apartment last weekend. 

He's at the hospital right now, and the doctors said I definitely shouldn't be anywhere near him now, but I was just wondering if anyone knows about the dangers of being exposed to it before the rash.  I haven't been able to find much on this by googling it, and I will of course call my OB on Monday, but just wondered if anyone could give me any reassurance. 

I'm in my first trimester, and I did have chickenpox as a kid.

    You cannot catch shingles from another person. Shingles is not contagious, it is a reactivation of the virus that causes chicken pox (cause of reactivation is usually unknown, it is thought to have something to do with stress or a compromised immune system).  However, someone with shingles can transfer the virus to someone who has never had the chicken pox.  So if you've had the chicken pox, I don't think you have anything to worry about! Hope your dad is ok.  Shingles can be really nasty.

    Thanks for the advice. The thing that's weird though, is that my aunt had it about 2 months ago, so everyone in my family suspects there must be some link...

    It's only a problem if you aren't immune to chicken pox. Your doctor should have checked for this with your prenatal labs.

    I had shingles when I was pregnant last time.  It sucked, but it was no risk to the baby/pregnancy.

    Kline551 is right, I've researched this extensively since I did not have cp as a child.  I was also exposed to shingles so I had a blood test and turns out I have a natural immunity to cp, but it sure was scary.  You shouldn't have to worry though since you've already had it.
