Anyone BF and have eyes dilated?

I didn't think about it until afterwards (after BF) but I looked up on the internet and found a lot of people saying its not safe to breastfeed after having eyes dilated.  Anyone know?

Re: Anyone BF and have eyes dilated?

  • Everything I have read says its safe, but I would ask your doc for a concrete answer.

  • I don't think there is a clear answer out there. I have had this concern while BFing each of my kids. With the first, I pumped and dumped and felt bad for doing so (I hate wasting milk). With my second, I went ahead and fed him. It's such a small amount that they put into your eyes that the amount that gets into your milk is so minuscule. I think they know that they can find traces of the medicine in bm but if it has any effect has not been determined, so they err on the side of caution and tell people not to BF (if they even ask if you are).
  • They were reluctant to dilate my eyes because I am pregnant... and then I said that I was also the one driving, and didn't want my eyes dilated anyway, so that solved that issue.
  • My doctor asked me if I was BF beforehand and said they are not sure of effects so he would wait and dilate me next year.  He didn't dilate me last year while I was pregnant, either.
