nbr: if you have a fireplace

What's the longest you've kept your fire going?

I'm in the South and just kicked it up today, in lieu of turning the heater on.  It was on for about 4 hours.  Is there ever a "too long" time?

Re: nbr: if you have a fireplace

  • We usually only burn fires for 3-4 hours, but mostly because we have them in the evening and let them die out before we go to bed.

  • The fireplace I'd say we've had it on all day before ---especially at the holidays.  But we also have a wood burning stove on the other side of the house that because of our house layout helps to heat the upstairs bedrooms----and we've kept that lit for hours and hours and even overnight--which scares me--but we have about 10 fire extinguishers around, fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms everywhere too.
  • In Cali, they are all gas now. I can turn mine and leave it on all day, but it puts off SO much heat its ridiculous. So its usually only on for maybe an hour, then I turn it off, then back on later if need be.

My mom runs her gas fireplace all day though. Cause my Grandmother wants the house like 75 degrees. She said it didn't effect her gas bill too much.
